Of books and Baby Boomers

The years between 1946 and 1964 not only constitute an era of the boomers, but they are also among the glory days of literature as books of several genres

and subjects tackled the very sensibilities of boomers, most of whom displayed an admirable love of reading.

In the dawn of the information age, the boomers’ select books started gathering dust but the younger generation of echo boomers also did take the time to

read the pages of yesteryears.

The great writers of a preceding era are almost always put on a literary pedestal by their followers. But it is not by tradition, or fad, or blind faith that

today’s readers held with utmost awe and respect the books read by their predecessors. Think analogically of having listened to an aging and experienced

adult and reading from the baby boomer authors.

One of the most popular books in the boomer period was published in 1946 as a literary journalistic piece— Hiroshima by John Hersey. Hersey narratively

presented true-to-life accounts of Hiroshima residents, a portion of whom who survived the Hiroshima bombing.   The reader steps into a bomb-ridden far away

world, that Hershey fashioned using words that filled the reader with cutting terror.

Another literary piece of the boomer period that made it into one of the most-read books is Thomas Mann’s Doctor Faustus, which was published in 1947. People

were not only discussing Faustus but they were equally interested in the evil spirit to whom the German legend sold his soul, Mephistopheles.

Another book, which is even more magical and fantastical than Doctor Faustus, was published in 1951— J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Lord of the Rings. The trilogy’s

movie adaptation in the new millennium was an instant success. The commendation credited to the fictionist who imagined the Middle Earth and presented it

before us in his gorgeously descriptive writing.

Only a few geniuses are born in every period but the boomer years exceeded what their followers and predecessors expected of them. Their contributions not

only to the literary field manifest until today and will continue to reverberate for generations to come.

The Corfu Trilogy

The Corfu Trilogy

The Corfu Trilogy consists of the popular classic My Family and Other Animals and its delightful sequels, Birds, Beasts and Relatives and The Garden of the Gods. All three books are set on the enchanted island of Corfu in the 1930s, and tell the story of the eccentic English family who moved there. For Gerald, the budding zoologist, Corfu was a natural paradise, teeming with strange birds and beasts that he could collect, watch and care for. But life was not without its problems – his family often objected to his animal-collecting activities, especially when the beasts wound up in the villa or – even worse – the fridge. With hilarious yet endearing portraits of his family and their many unusual hangers-on, The Corfu Trilogy also captures the beginnings of the author’s lifelong love of animals. Recounted with immense humour and charm, this wonderful account of Corfu’s natural history reveals a rare, magical childhood. For the passionate zoologist, Corfu was a natural paradise, teeming with strange birds and beasts that he could collect, watch and care for. But life was not without its problems – Gerald’s family often objected to his animal-collecting activities, especially when the beasts wound up in the family’s villa or – even worse – the fridge. Gerald Durrell evokes his island paradise with passion and wonder.

Trilogy of Resistance

Trilogy of Resistance

$75

With Trilogy of Resistance, the political philosopher Antonio Negri extends his intervention in contemporary politics and culture into a new medium: drama. The three plays collected for the first time in this volume dramatize the central concepts of the innovative and influential thought he has articulated in his best-selling books Empire and Multitude, coauthored with Michael Hardt. In the tradition of Bertolt Brecht and Heiner Mnller, NegriÆs political dramas are designed to provoke debate around the fundamental questions they raise about resistance, violence, and tyranny. In Swarm, the protagonist searches for an effective mode of activism; with the help of a Greek-style chorus, she tries on different roles, from the suicide bomber and party apparatchik to the multitude. The Bent Man, set in fascist Italy, focuses on a woodcutter who resists fascism by bending himself in two and using his own now-twisted body as a weapon against war. In Cithaeron, perhaps the most audacious of the three plays, Negri reworks EuripidesÆs Bacchae to explore the circumstances that would compel a diverse and creative community to withdraw from both the despotic government that constrains it and the traditional family relationships that reinforce that despotism.First published in France in 2009 and featuring an introduction by Negri, Trilogy of Resistance provides a direct and passionate distillation of NegriÆs concepts and offers insights into one of the most important projects in political philosophy currently under way, as well as a timely reminder of the power of theater to effectively dramatize complex and challenging ideas.
