Why do some widescreen movies still show up / down bar?

I have a plasma screen of 42 inches, some widescreen dvd movies even show black bars top and bottom. My plasma Manuel said that I can not display movies and programs with black bands for a long period time because it could leave permanent marks on my tv. I can play in full screen, but I have to enlarge it, thus reducing the quality of the picture, any suggestions on how to get it? Is it safe to watch 2 or 3 hour movie with bars on the plasma TV?

The previous poster accurately describes the situation – most films are shot in a format wider than the widescreen TV. They have two options, see the black bars to maintain the full width of the image or attitude of the left and right edges of the fastener. Is it safe? I have a plasma TV 42 "too. I do not worry. If it was really a problem to watch a 2-3 hour movie on the screen, there is much indignation in the community owner Plasma TV now. Warnings in the owner's manual for the watch are on the watch with black bars for 8 hours or more per day, 7 days a week. While you are watching broadcasts of 16:9, 4:3 programming, and / or 4:3 zoom or stretched programming, afterimages, if they occur, should not be noticeable. I'm 10 months with my TV where the display TiVo will be left in place for an hour or two. Not that I recommend, but we have not seen the evil effects of burn-in or image quality reduced. Relax, relax, and enjoy the show.

The double-disc soundtrack to the blockbuster Saturday Night Fever (available on a single CD) marks both the zenith and the nadir of disco. Wicked (2003 Original Broadway Cast)

Wicked (2003 Original Broadway Cast)

$9.89

One of the most common complaints about musicals is that the books are flimsy pretexts from which to hang numbers. Wicked runs into the opposite problem: it has a great plot, but too often the songs just get in the way. Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel of the same name, Wicked tells us what happened between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, before Dorothy showed up in Oz. …

If you have ever wanted to dig around in the archives for that perfect Sunday afternoon DVD and first turned to a witty weekly column in the New York Times , then you are already familiar with one of our nation’s premier film critics. If you love movies—and the writers who engage them—and just happen to have followed two of the highest circulating daily papers in the country, then you probably recognize the name of the intellectually dazzling writer who has been penning pieces on American and foreign films for over thirty years. And if you called the City of the Big Shoulders home in the 1970s or 1980s and relied on those trenchant, incisive reviews from the Chicago Reader and the Chicago Tribune to guide your moviegoing delight, then you know Dave Kehr.  When Movies Mattered presents a wide-ranging and illuminating selection of Kehr’s criticism from the Reader —most of which is reprinted here for the first time—including insightful discussions of film history and his controversial Top Ten lists. Long heralded by his peers for both his deep knowledge and incisive style, Kehr developed his approach to writing about film from the auteur criticism popular in the ’70s. Though Kehr’s criticism has never lost its intellectual edge, it’s still easily accessible to anyone who truly cares about movies. Never watered down and always razor sharp, it goes beyond wry observations to an acute examination of the particular stylistic qualities that define the work of individual directors and determine the meaning of individual films. From current releases to important revivals, from classical Hollywood to foreign fare, Kehr has kept us spellbound with his insightful critical commentaries. When Movies Mattered will secure his place among our very best writers about all things cinematic.
