“Beloved” by Toni Morrison – Opinions, Ideas, etc?
I’m am going to start working on a paper for a novels class. I’m going to be writing on Toni Morrison’s “Beloved”. I just want some input from people that have read it. (Please no Spoilers!) I just want to get some ideas and impressions from people that have read the book.
I’m supposed to “focus on a specific literary work and the way it fits into the canon of the American novel” and the way it address the literary movement or category Beloved represents.
Some Questions:
What is Toni Morrison’s writting style? What are some important themes? What literary movement does Beloved fit into? What is your critic of “Beloved”?
One more thing, does anyone now of a particularly good biography on Morrison?
I appreciate any comments!
And please don’t tell me to Google the information… Mostly I just want a fellow reader’s opinion.
Thank you!
It’s been awhile since I read the book – but it did make a lasting impression on me.
Her writing style from what I recall – are lengthy paragraphs when she wants to reflect on an important aspect on her characters life. She smoothly bounces around from character to character – depicting each view. When Paul D shows up at the house – she clearly gets across how Denver feels about it and how Sethe feels about it.
The themes certainly have to deal with slavery and indentity of the individual and class structure. Beloved would fit in to what people are deeming today as the ‘post-modern era’ of literature and other art. Definitely a modern classic. No doubt in my mind.
I am not aware of any good biogrpahies on Morrison – but I’m sure there must be some out there.
