Apocalypse! (Fast dancing, it is almost Closing Time)

We hear a lot these days about global realignment, a pole shift, the beginning of a new era, even the end of the world, predictions of events that would coincide with the conclusion of the Mayan "Long Count" calendar – December 21, 2012.

We have heard this kind of thing before. The approach of the year 2000 – Y2K – has led to a flood of fears and predictions. Do computer clocks to be able to change for 2000? Good God, what if could not? "(As it happened, they could.) Inevitably, the year 2000 has inspired predictions of the end of the world and / or the second coming of Christ. This was not the first year of a new millennium, by the way: Because there was no year zero in 2001 – not 2000 – was the first year of the 21st century. Anyway, there was no second coming, no end world.

However, people can be difficult to deter. In 1831, William Miller, a farmer and preacher of New York, began proclaim that the prophecies of the Apocalypse was imminent. Miller won many fans. In 1840, he announced that Christ would return some somewhere between 21 March 1843 and March 21, 1844. Finally arrived March 21, 1844. But Jesus did not. It was disconcerting to the followers of Miller, especially the thousands of them who had given all their possessions, thinking they had more for them (1).

Miller thinks the issue has concluded he had miscalculated and revised the date to April 18. At that time, once again, nothing happened. But the movement is not over. Samuel S. Snow, in a camp meeting in August following in Exeter, New Hampshire, gave his own version of the situation and said that the actual date for the big event was October 22, 1844. Over 100,000 Millerites, many dressed in white robes, waited expectantly on the hills and rooftops. Guess what happened.

The reason of their false faith became known as the great disappointment of 1844 (2).

In addition to this event, a certain religious group has wrongly predicted the imminent end of the system "things" not less than nine times since the 19th century: in 1874, 1878, 1881, 1910, 1914, 1918, 1925, 1975 and 1984 (3).

Even scientists have been known to make predictions wacko. Vladimir Sobolyovhas analyzed prophecies made by Nostradamus, and various saints of Russia, and others and announced in 1997 that within two years the Earth's axis inclination is about thirty degrees. Scandinavia and Great Britain would end up underwater. And the screenplay does not stop there. Evil extraterrestrials, also play a role in the declarations Sobolyovhas, but we're not even in this part. Suffice it to say that not everyone can be blessed with lucidity. (3)

And the claims of 2012? According to David Morrison, senior scientist at NASA, "There is no planetary alignment in December 2012. As for the alignment with the center of the Milky Way, is an empty phrase. This may sound scientific, but it is devoid of content. To put it bluntly, these claims … alignments and catastrophe in December 2012 are lies. "(4) (5)
