Can I exchange or return an opened DVD at Walmart without a receipt?

I got supernatural season 2 on DVD as a gift, but when I tried to watch the first disc in the box, it did not work. I tried to play on other systems and disk is unreadable. I wanted it to be returned for credit so I can rebuy the DVD hoping to get one with a disk read or simply the exchange. Can I do it without a receipt because it was a gift and if I have open? Obviously, the only way I would able to know if the drive has worked or not was to open it.

I recently had to return some baby shoes Wal-Mart without a receipt and the packaging is opened. (The shoes were two totally different sizes!). The rule is as follows … If the packet is open, without a receipt, you can get a store credit in the form of a gift card. If less than ten dollars, you get the choice of cash or a gift card.
