King's College Chapel, Cambridge

Completion of examinations for admission to the University of Cambridge is a important achievement, as one of his students tell you. Staying there is the other half of the exploit. A good place to pray for the success not a bad thing to have on campus.

Maybe that was the spirit of Henry VI when he decided to build a chapel on the grounds of the university. King's College Chapel, Chapel of King's College, University of Cambridge, and is considered as being one of the finest examples of late English Gothic, also known as the Perpendicular style.

Henry VI planned a return at the University of Eton College, the chapel is very similar, though unfinished. The chapel is the only party that has been built. Dimensions of the chapel have been decided by the king and the architect has been appointed Reginald Ely, who was commissioned in 1444. On July 25, 1446, day of Saint-Jacques, the first stone was laid, the College of Cambridge was started in 1441. Despite the Wars of Roses, and by the end the reign of Richard III (1485), five bays chapel was completed and erected a wooden roof. In 1506, Henry VII (father of the famous Henry VIII) visited, giving the work to resume and even leaving money to ensure that the work would continue after his death. Maybe between marriage, Henry VIII had the chapel of King's College, Cambridge completed in 1515, but the large windows were still to be done.

Among the outstanding features of the chapel are the fan vaulting, the largest in the world, stained glass and painting The Adoration of the Magi by Peter Paul Rubens originally painted for the convent of the Sisters white Leuven in Belgium.

The large windows of King's College Chapel, Cambridge

The twelve large windows on each side of the chapel of Cambridge, and the windows are to the east and west, some of the most beautiful in the world of their time. With the exception of the west window, they work Flemish dating from 1515 to 1531.

Barnard Flower, the first non-Englishman named Glazier King's (Window Maker in modern language), has completed four windows. Gaylon Hone with three partners (two English and a Flemish) are responsible for the chapel at the east windows and 16 others between 1526 and 1531. Francis Williamson and Symon Symonds added four others. Chapel Cambridge is a modern window in the west wall, made by Clayton and Bell Company, dating from 1879.

In addition to actively used as a place of worship, the chapel is also the place for concerts and events College, Cambridge. Renowned for its superb acoustics, the famous chapel Choir includes choral scholars (male students of the college) and choristers (boys educated at the nearby King's College School) currently under the direction of Stephen Cleobury. The choir sings the chapel service on almost every day during school, and also performs concerts and makes broadcasts and recordings. The loved Nine Lessons and Carols is performed and broadcast every Christmas Eve by the BBC from the Chapel Cambridge as it has been for many decades. There is also a mixed voice choir of men and Chapel Student, King's Voices, singing vespers Monday during term time at Cambridge.
