What are the steps to writing and publishing books?
I have no idea where to start. can you give me a list of the basics that can get my books published and in stores? All I know is that I have to get an ‘agent’. but I’m lost from there. Thanks!
First, write your book. That’s one gigantic step that you need to take before even CONSIDERING getting an agent.
Writing your book consists of so many steps… brainstorming, structuring, multiple drafts, proofing, fine-tuning, getting feedback from trusted readers… Not until it’s ready to be published will you be ready to find an agent.
Once that’s finished, months or years from now, you’ll be ready to start searching for agents and writing up query letters.
Query letters are attention-grabbing letters that you send to agents, selling them the idea of your novel in hopes that they’ll ask to read your manuscript. There are several online resources for crafting effective query letters and finding agents that represent your kind of novel.
Once you get an agent, you begin to talk legal issues. You write up a contract, ensuring this agent will get a percentage of the money you’ll get from selling your book. This agent will then do whatever they can to find a publisher for you. Sometimes the agent or the agent’s editor friend will suggest changes in the story, to make the novel more effective, more catchy, more sell-able.
Now, sometimes you can skip this step of getting an agent, and go right for the publishers, but manuscripts coming from agents are seen as much more likely to be of high quality than manuscripts coming straight from a writer. But, it can still be picked, even if you don’t have an agent.
Once a publisher is interested, you get into more money/legal issues. Royalties, advance against royalties, international publishing rights, movie rights, etc. The book goes through final editing and then your publisher does everything they can to get it at barnes and noble and other book stores, to get the attention of book magazines and other resources that will help people realize your book exists. You will go on a few “local author‘ book signings to generate local interest. Generally, you will sell a few thousand copies of your book. If it is successful it will go through more legal things like audio book production, more widespread book signing events, etc.
That’s pretty much it… in a very very generic nutshell.
Write the book first. One step at a time. Each and every one of these steps is a kind of monster in itself… don’t focus on the end, focus on the journey.
