poet biographies
What is the best way to figure out a poem’s theme?

Look for a line in which the poet states the theme directly.
Infer the theme from details, images, and symbols.
Analyze the rhyme scheme and meter of the poem.
Use the poet’s biography as a clue.

There’s no mechanical answer to such a question, but I’ll give one to see what I come up with.

All statements about theme are best stated as a complete sentence–otherwise you have only a subject.

Look for the dramatic turn in the poem, the place where it changes, as most poems do.

Figure out if it’s a turn the poem thinks is good. If so state the theme as an affirmation; if not, state it as a denial.

Leonard Cohen–songwriter, poet, former monk, ladies man, and sharp dresser–receives a near-hagiographical treatment in I’m Your Man, a part concert-part documentary in which his work is interpreted by an array of singers. Cohen tributes are nothing new, what with Jennifer Warnes’ Famous Blue Raincoat and the multi-artist compilations Tower of Song and I’m Your Fan having preceded this one. But m…

Bronson (Widescreen Edition)

Bronson (Widescreen
edition)

$7.14

Tom Hardy’s performance in the lead role burns right through Bronson, the somewhat true tale of a real guy who, once the movie finishes, you’ll be very glad is still locked up in an English jail. There’s no obvious reason why Michael Peterson became what he proudly calls “Britain’s most violent prisoner.” His upbringing was normal, his parents meek but loving; he was even married with a child when…

Bright Star

Add Jane Campion’s rich, sensuous, quietly thrilling Bright Star to the very short list of admirable films about writers.
