What are some great novels / books for an incoming freshman to read?
Please dont say harry potter, narnia, or any other fantasy books because I dont have an interest in them.
If you could add some books that are more mature like The Kite Runner.
Thank you!!!
The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven – collection of short stories (don’t be decieved by the title) by Native American author, Sherman Alexi
Of Mice and Men – John Steinbeck
Water for Elephants – Sara Gruen
A poetry collection of some sort.
Tuesdays with Morrie – Mich Albom
A Streetcare Named Desire – Tennesse Williams, technically it’s a play, but it’s still good to read

Josh Groban $4.72 There are worse things in life than making your acting debut on the much ballyhooed season finale of Ally McBeal, though teen operatic baritone Josh Groban doesn’t seem destined to encounter them anytime soon. While Ray of Light is being tagged as Madonna’s big leap into electronica, it’s important to note two things: First, her music has always had close ties to … |

Encyclopedia of Comic Books and Graphic Novels $180 At a time when graphic novels have expanded beyond their fan cults to become mainstream bestsellers and sources for Hollywood entertainment, Encyclopedia of Comic Books and Graphic Novels serves as an exhaustive exploration of the genre’s history, its landmark creators and creations, and its profound influence on American life and culture. Encyclopedia of Comic Books and Graphic Novels focuses on English-language comics–plus a small selection of influential Japanese and European works available in English–with special emphasis on the new graphic novel format that emerged in the 1970s. Entries cover influential comic artists and writers such as Will Eisner, Alan Moore, and Grant Morrison, major genres and themes, and specific characters, comic book imprints, and landmark titles, including the pulp noir 100 Bullets, the post-apocalyptic Y: The Last Man, the revisionist superhero drama, Identity Crisis, and more. Key franchises such as Superman and Batman are the center of a constellation of related entries that include graphic novels and other imprints featuring the same characters or material. |

The Waverley Novels $3.99 The Waverley Novels are a long series of books by Sir Walter Scott. For nearly a century they were among the most popular and widely-read novels in all of Europe. Because he did not publicly acknowledge authorship until 1827, they take their name from Waverley (1814), which was the first. The later books bore the words "by the author of Waverley" on their title pages.— Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Books $10.99 In a prolific life of singular literary achievement, Larry McMurtry has succeeded in a variety of genres: in coming-of-age novels like The Last Picture Show ; in collections of essays like In a Narrow Grave ; and in the reinvention of the Western on a grand scale in his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Lonesome Dove . Now, in Books: A memoir , McMurtry writes about his endless passion for books: as a boy growing up in a largely “bookless” world; as a young man devouring the vastness of literature with astonishing energy; as a fledgling writer and family man; and above all, as one of America’s most prominent bookmen. He takes us on his journey to becoming an astute, adventurous book scout and collector who would eventually open stores of rare and collectible editions in Georgetown, Houston, and finally, in his previously “bookless” hometown of Archer City, Texas. In this work of extraordinary charm, grace, and good humor, McMurtry recounts his life as both a reader and a writer, how the countless books he has read worked to form his literary tastes, while giving us a lively look at the eccentrics who collect, sell, or simply lust after rare volumes. Books: A Memoir is like the best kind of diary — full of McMurtry’s wonderful anecdotes, amazing characters, engaging gossip, and shrewd observations about authors, book people, literature, and the author himself. At once chatty, revealing, and deeply satisfying, Books is, like McMurtry, erudite, life loving, and filled with excellent stories. It is a book to be savored and enjoyed again and again. |

Palliser novels $3.99 The "Palliser novels" are six novels by Anthony Trollope. The common thread is the wealthy aristocrat and politician Plantagenet Palliser and (in all but the last book) his wife Lady Glencora. The plots usually involve English politics in varying degrees, specifically in and around Parliament.the books are:Can You Forgive Her? (1864) Phineas Finn (1869) The Eustace Diamonds (1873) Phineas Redux (1874) The Prime Minister (1876) The Duke's Children (1879). The series stands in contrast to Trollope's Chronicles of Barsetshire, also six novels, which deal with life in a more rural fictional county. The series is alluded to in Anna Karenina, which deals with a similar theme.— Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. |
