Is 70,000 words a good length to submit for a first-time novelist?
I’m about done with my most recent novel, and it’s the first one I really, truly love. In just 25 more pages or so, I’ll be complete, and I want to submit it to agents. Is 70,000 words too short for a first-time novelist? It’s sort of a blend of science fiction and fantasy.
No, it’s a good number for a debut novel 
While it’s good and all to write long fantasy stories there are other things involved, such as stocking your book and the printing costs. publishers don’t want to gamble money on an unknown author who may not make back the money they spend, and so it’s good to have a book in the range of 70k-100k.
The reason why they don’t like much shorter books is that people are less likely to buy them as they want more text for their money, while massive fat books are costly to make. So this, you could say, is the ‘golden band’.
In any case, I don’t think you should worry about word count — if you’re proud of your story then go ahead and try to publish it. Remember that the next stage is having faith in your book as many people get rejected by agents and publishers plenty of times before their book goes through — if it happens, don’t worry. Just take any advice you get and keep trying.
