What happens next in a novel?

So I’ve been working on my novel I’ve hit a bit of a snag. I’m not sure what to do next. The main protagonist is a 28 year old male and he just pulled himself out of a pool of marshy sludge. He is with a young girl – who just told him that he is a magician (or a wizard essentially). He’s running from the main villain who just killed the protagonists father. The setting is a forest and its midday. What happens next?

Either the villain catches up with them and the wizard is forced to defend himself and magic starts shooting out of him so that he now believes the girl and can get away from the villain.

Or they manage to get away and the girl teaches him a few spells to help protect them, cover their tracks, hide them or defend them. Maybe even conjure up some food and sleeping bags.
