What is the author lifespan of the average fiction writer?

I know some really popular authors are able to publish a book or a series of book to last for a lifetime (Catcher in the Rye, Harry Potter). Most books don’t become that famous, however, and most writers, it seems like their book is on the book shelf for 5 years or something, and then it’s taken out of circulation. I mean, fiction books published in the early 80’s aren’t all in Barnes & Noble bookstores, right? So, what do you think is the average lifespan for an average fiction book, and for a average fiction author for that matter.

Most hardcover books are in stores for three to nine months before being sent back to the publisher. Twelve to eighteen months after the hardcover release, the book is published again in a paperback format. paperback books whether published after a hardcover or in a first printing, generally remain in stores for six to twelve months before they are either permanently added to the store’s stock or once again sent back to the publisher. The length of time depends entirely on sales in individual stores, so a lesser known author may be able to have his or her book carried in their local Barnes & Noble or Borders, even if it’s not carried in any of the others, if they are well known in the community or willing to market it. Just because the book is no longer sold in a store, however, does not mean it is no longer available. Until the original printing of the books are sold, they will remain available through the publisher and/or by order in-store and online through retailers.

Science Fiction, Children's Literature, and Popular Culture

science fiction, children’s literature, and Popular Culture

$161

In a constantly changing world, individuals are forever growing to meet the challenges and developments that emerge around them. In contemporary society, technology is at the heart of change. Literature, too, reflects the evolution of culture and increasingly represents and considers technology. And as children become young adults, their reading helps shape their understanding of the world. This book examines representative works of science fiction, children’s literature, and popular culture to show how these works reflect the process of growing up in a technological world. The volume looks at the simple picture books and comic books that appeal to small children; the formulaic adventures that fascinate older children; the films and television programs that are watched by children and young adolescents; the music videos and programming that appeal to young adults; and the popular novels that interest older readers. Included are discussions of Superman, the Hardy Boys, Star Trek, science fiction films, and music videos. The book points to similarities among popular culture, science fiction, and children’s literature and demonstrates the relevance of these works to contemporary society.

Graham Greene and the Politics of Popular Fiction and Film

Graham Greene and the Politics of Popular Fiction and Film

$90

One of the most popular, respected and controversial writers of the twentieth century, Greene's work has still attracted relatively little scholarly comment. Thomson charts the intricate dance between his novels and screenplays, his many audiences, and an intellectual establishment reluctant to identify the work of a popular writer as 'literature'.
