jane austen movies
what is the deal with all of the jane austen movies lately??

All of a sudden in the past few months, all of these jane austen movies have been coming out, but why? There was pride and prejudice the jane austen book club, persuasion, now another sense and sensibility? What happened to cause people to start coming out with all of these movies? Please, somebody enlighten me!

It’s actually been happening over the course of years. Austen’s books make very fine movie period pieces, and various movie companies take them on from time to time.

This is one of those times. Go to a vid store or look at a movie list covering ‘anything Austen’ for any number of years (search decade by decade) and you’ll see what I mean.

You know how ‘Hollywood’ (and even independent film makers) are… once a ‘genre’ shows promise, it will be used up. For a decade or two.

Mafia [VHS]

Mafia [VHS]

This hapless comedy may actually work a lot better on video than it did in theaters. A parody of contemporary mob movies (with a few sidebars skewering such hits as Forrest Gump and The English Patient), Mafia! most closely resembles the first two Godfather films in its generational saga of a gangster family. Lloyd Bridges plays Don Cortino, a native Sicilian who presides over a crime syndicate…

literary adaptations just don’t get any better than director Joe Wright’s 2005 version of Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice. The key word here is adaptation, because Wright and gifted screenwriter Deborah Moggach have taken liberties with Austen’s classic novel that purists may find objectionable, but in this exquisite film their artistic decisions are entirely justified and exceptionally well execu…
