The girl who played with fire by Stieg Larsson – book review

Gripping. The second tranche of Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson, The Girl Who played with fire, is not only a worthy successor to the first is even better! Why is it better? This novel is where the reader is properly up to the feisty heroine Lisbeth Salander.

In The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Larsson has enough readers to the barracks on Salander instinct, but it remained something of an enigma, held at arms length so to speak. As in the first novel, the story is told from the point of view many characters, but the narrator in the spotlight this time rather than Salander investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist. male protagonist Larsson Blomkvist plays the role of supporting Salander in this release, past surveys Salander and the events that changed the course of his life and shape its values. Through this exploration of the past and thoughts through the narrative Salander we really learn what turns Salander and what are his motivations. Salander interaction with Palmgren, stroke victim and defend Salander adds real depth and unforgettable story too.

I am in awe Stieg Larsson's ability as a writer of fiction – I think he was really gifted. The complexity of its plot, subplots and whatever else called "plots below are sub-plots," apart from other novels I read, except perhaps David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas (Mitchell that are more philosophical or cryptic connections while Larsson are immersed in the pool is the novel and the world he has created). How did he keep track of all these characters and interdependencies? I can not imagine a wall with a character map that looked like a bowl of spaghetti.

The only comment I constructively can really make the girl who played with fire, is that in some places the prose does not seem quite as smooth as its predecessor. This does undermined the very gritty story. He could have simply been a symptom of the translation or perhaps a little less edited by the author before his death, even before the first novel of the trilogy being published.

I can not wait to read the latest novel of this trilogy Millennium, but I know so that as soon as I turn the final page, I am disappointed that there will be no more opportunities to read about these wonderful characters Salander and Blomkvist.

‘Human genius has done much, and promises much, in the way of removing the mystery from many things in our world; at the same time it recognises and honours the mystery in things too.’ In this collection A.C. Grayling extends the range of his previous two books to show how much understanding people can gain about themselves and their world by reflecting on the lessons offered by science, the arts (including literature) and history. Covering subjects as diverse as jane austen’s EMMA, the Rosetta Stone, Shakespeare, the Holocaust, quantum physics, Galileo, and even alien abductions, A..C. Grayling’s latest collection is a rich source for reflection and contemplation over the mysteries of life.
