What are illuminated manuscripts and why did they flourish during the medieval period?
NEED HELP PLEASE!
Illuminated manuscripts are beautifully illustrated books written on vellum (animal hides) or parchment. Books were very rare, since they had to be hand-copied. They were often religious books or Bibles or prayer books. The average person could not afford a book because of the time and expense involved in creating one. For example, “bBy 1424, Cambridge University library owned only 122 books—each of which had a value equal to a farm or vineyard.”
It was not until around 1440, when Gutenberg invented movable type, that books became generally available to the rising middle classes. Gutenberg also invented an oil-based ink that was more suitable for printing, and used paper as well as vellum for printing (paper had been brought to Europe from the East after the Crusades). Movable type made printing books faster, so more could be printed, bringing down the price. So illuminated manuscripts became pretty much obsolete.
