Social chaos as
Introduction
Chaos is a new way of understanding the social order. Rather than a paradox perverse, this assertion is based on the various developments in the theory of chaos in the natural sciences and mathematics (Barnsley 1988; Crutchfield et al 1986; Dewdney 1985, Gleick 1987, Mandelbrot 1983; Mullin, 1993). Over the past two decades, chaos theory has been applied in many disciplines Theoretical and Applied Science (Baier and Klein, 1991, Cohen and Stewart, 1994, Davies and Gribbin 1992, Gleick 1987, Hao 1990, Holden, 1986; Moon, 1987; Mullin 1993; Rasband 1990; Ruelle 1989), including some social sciences (Brown, 1994; Chen; Dendrinos and Sonis 1990; Gell-Mann 47-48; Goodwin, 1990; Hao 573-632; Holton and May; Kiel and Elliott, 1996, Lewin 44-62; Nicolis, 1991). The applications will however, have used chaos theory as a mathematical tool integrated conventional conceptual frameworks rather than as another conceptual framework that could illuminate even the social order from which the theory of chaos has emerged. To serve conceptually chaos theory must be understood conceptually.
In this article, I do not produce mathematical models or Computer simulations and I do not offer rich new data. I also certainly do not use the chaos as a metaphor. It not a literary exercise designed to decorate the social sciences with another image, like the machine, the organization, the deductive system, or the debate contradictory (Morgan, 1986).
It might seem appropriate to chaos group with these metaphors heuristics. These metaphors have been used in social sciences to approach and explore phenomena that are believed to be otherwise intractable scientific scrutiny. However, the success of multiple research efforts in mathematics, physical life, and social sciences in identifying different types of chaos suggests that the dynamics of chaos should not be grouped with metaphors, but with the known types of order such as linear deterministic, stochastic and random.
This group stresses that I use chaos as a theory, not as a model (Harvey and Reed 309). My use of chaos theory is and non-semantic (Richards 98). This grouping is no denying that most of the current research has considered the chaos as the result of changes within the parameters of deterministic systems. Chaos is widely regarded as deterministic chaos. It also claims the discovery of chaotic dynamics of social science data (Kiel and Elliot) when the social situations of production data can not be reduced to linear principles deterministic or equations. This assertion seems to flow from the possibility that chaos is an order type that is not strictly dependent systems Deterministic its existence. Indeed, as a type of order and chaos may be the first clear link between reductive and non-specific conditions in digital systems and physical, such as phase transitions, and a ubiquitous, spontaneous quality of social reality. Rather than a mode or a metaphor of place, chaos can be a small window in a new and better way of understanding human life that includes determinism, randomness, random.
Grouping chaos with the known types of frames for chaos as an understandable form of order rather than as a metaphor any condition incomprehensible. In addition to being aligned more useful, this group also raises a deeper question of philosophy or foundations social science. This question defines the horizon of my inquiry here: What properties must the universe (social) have to present the four types of order?
Considering the chaos as an order type that allows me to use the results of experiments to pave the conceptual chaos that the social order. I present the characteristics required of chaos that address the social order. Emphasis mixing / folding phenomenon characteristic of chaotic physical phenomena (51-4 Crutchfield and al; Gleick 122, 255, 257; Mullin 19-21). I focus on social power in the form of shares on the stock provides a bridge to understand the chaos that the social order.
After this presentation of chaos theory as a conceptual framework, I can have an application of chaos theory to various social phenomena – the oppression, modernization, change language, moral change, political change, and in cyberspace. As part of this application, I show that chaos theory can be used to clarify conceptually contemporary social order, but the nature of social phenomena important limitations on the application of mathematical theory the chaos of social science data.
Social power
We begin by reflecting on the fact that other – father, mother, brothers and sisters, pets, blankets, rain, sun – we have acted on a long time. Others, both animate and inanimate, acted not only on our bodies as instruments of rain on the tin, water or sand, but more particularly on the attempts of our body to act. These actions include all qualities – punch and caress, kiss and grow, praise and blame, to approve and reject, and so on. These actions on our actions have led and developed a social power: actions on the shares.
Shares on the stock sounds repetitive. Not redundant, but repetitive in the same direction, something that is recurring in each action. Similarity with the difference that characterizes individual life stories, family stories and history community. Indeed, as historical beings, all human life is at stake in every human action on an action – patterned, compressed, focused, refracted, Split – provided that all of a language is "in" no case of its use.
What precisely then is the process actions on actions? One can interpret this sentence as the scalar recursion is the repetition of similar structure at different scales. Something similar is in all cases of actions on the actions, whether in the relationship between a commander and a military establishment while a lieutenant and a platoon or a private and another.
Paying more attention to the expression "equity share" supports such a link between social power with the theory of chaos. The first and third terms – "action" – are identical, but this identity is described by the second term – "at". Preposition "About" is used rather than those that indicate the symmetry or equality, as "with," with "," next " etc. verbal sense of "action" is amplified by the dynamic sense of the preposition. These observations can be summarized as provisional the social power structure that actions on the actions of the dynamic asymmetry.
We then observed the absence of any modifiers called "actions". Words such as "all," most "," many "," some ", etc. could be used. But we can not actually count the number actions on their bodies. This noncountability extends across all scales of man. This is true if the time scale action is mediated by national trends generational cohorts of life, years of family patterns mediated by parents, years of being a consumer, student, parent, child, or an employee, or months of meetings, will constantly be engaged, or married. It is not possible, Therefore, to adapt to this idea of social power in a quantitative dualism countability as finite / infinite. This inability to its turn, refines the draft synthesis in the preceding paragraph: "on" is ambivalent and ambiguous asymmetric. This is not necessarily either symmetric unbalanced.
For the detector Attractor
This understanding of social power can be used as a power detector. It can be used in any situation of man in order to, to expose or highlight, to expose or reveal power relations. The power detector is not like a metal detector is a distinct physical thing, or that he is like a thermometer which reduces a quantitative fitness complex. There is a detector of human situations where people's actions can be found to influence people's actions. It can be used to consider the analytical relations of cooperation or collaboration, which are in effect, actions on the shares, and to examine situations of oppression. He predicted that the social power will be dynamic, ambiguous and fluid balanced / unbalanced, and numerically legion.
The state of uncountability can be understood as meaning that the shares can be decomposed and recomposed more or less indefinitely in models included. The oppression of being forcibly confined in a psychiatric facility, for example, can be analyzed in terms of many – architectural, political, economic, familial, social, psychiatric, etc. All the terms are relevant to an analysis of completeness but none of the conditions exhausts the range of actions on the actions in such a situation.
We can now consider a smooth process of social or surface water in a laminar flow without turbulence or chaos. The onset of turbulence or chaos is both qualitative and quantitative change the laminar state and is not simply an accumulation of preconditions. The change introduced a model characterized by the repetition and the similarity between different scales of the model. The social power detector detects a repeated action on the action between people humans. The repetition and similarity indicate a certain appeal to players from each other. The detector indicates an attractor.
In chaos theory, an attractor is a model in space. The type of space is the state or phase space. phase space is a multidimensional space including Cartesian coordinates and momentum of a system, ie, the attractor. There are many definitions attractors in the literature (Cohen and Stewart 204-7, Coveney and Highfield 166-75; Gleick 150, 232-6; Hao 16-18, 51-63, Kiel and Elliott 26, 54-5, 172; Mainzer 4 – 7, 58-9; Mullin x-xii; etc..) Definition of the Moon is simple and useful: an attractor is a "set of points or a subspace in phase space to which the approach a history of time after passing out. For example, the equilibrium points or fixed points in maps, limit cycles, or toric surface for quasiperiodic motions, dynamic are all classical attractors "(261). The model of attractor is a state of equilibrium or a set of states to which a dynamic system converges. An attractor is not necessarily one or more States only.
The verbal phrase "to which converges …" reflects this non-dualistic quality and also points to the quality of an attractor that makes strange in the end a balance is never reached – the symmetry is never achieved, nor a "stable" asymmetry reached. The diagram shows self-similarity across scales, but it never reaches an identity, or equilibrium condition. Using the Moon again a strange attractor is the "attraction located in the phase space moving on chaotic orbits. attractor A which is not a equilibrium point or a limit cycle or a quasiperiodic attractor. An attractor in phase space with fractal dimension "(267).
A sharply defined characteristic of a strange attractor, moreover, is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions. The pattern of strange attractor can be considered as ways of starting points to arbitrarily small distances from each other. Over time, these distances change so fast that later in the configuration of the initial conditions are more observable. The latest state of the whole system or can not be deterministically related to the state beginning.
It has been proven repeatedly in the two numerical experiments and physical model should involve simultaneous bending and stretching. For example, you put a little dark blue dye on the surface of a chunk White bread dough. You then knead the dough. kneading the folds and stretches the dough. Folding and stretching blue dye mixture in the dough until it is distributed throughout the dough. the whole mass of dough is light blue. It is physically or mathematically not be determined from the final statement of dye mixed into the dough where space was at the beginning. The sensitivity of the system's state Initial means that, whatever about the other elements are initially stretching and bending results in the initial conditions are more relevant observable deterministic. Such a mixture involves the expansion and contraction simultaneously. As it happens, sooner or old information is destroyed and new information is created or later.
Chaos and oppression
When introduced into consideration of oppression, this approach highlights some crucial aspects. Firstly, the oppression of the human body works in two distinct ways – One by removing the body at home and two covering the body with non-indigenous, clothing uniforms. Examples of these two operations can be found with prisoners of war, convicts, committed mental patients, military personnel, and students in compulsory education.
Secondly, work on the structures of oppression of man and the earth. imperialism, whether religious, political, military, or ecological, has participated in the destruction of buildings and parts of the earth such as plantations, crops, livestock, fields, and species. Examples are the destruction of plantations in the Old Testament, the burning of manuscripts in China 212 BC and the burning of the Library of Alexandria in 525 AD. More currently, the destruction of areas of human life and places, tropical forests, sites of life, sections of old cities, involves the destruction of old data and the creation of new information.
The combination of these two operations of oppression, we see human body survivors, born and bred close together, then mixed and dressed so that, when viewed later, no trace of their initial conditions – the indigenous or native states – remain. The old information on the identity of former displaced persons or places destroyed are replaced by new information resulting from an action on people and places. If we add to the repression of, obsolescence and the disappearance of languages and customs are not privileged, the image of uniform mixing, or by mixing uniformity, becomes clearer.
Third, sensitive dependence on initial conditions in both physical and numerical experiments involving the amplification of small differences initials in larger differences later. Twins, brothers and sisters, and neighborhood or village cohorts often develop the lifestyle that not only focused on their initial conditions, but also differ from each other means that are not susceptible to deterministic linear calculation. In the case of groups of refugees ethnically homogeneous cross a border into another country, individual lifestyles may diverge beyond calculation in linear time.
Point of view of social power, the actions of these people worked through the actions of social actions that "mix", "double" and "stretch" the whole world. In one and the same time, contemporary, industrial, urban society functions at all stereotypes, while providing physical and mental means of differentiation individual. From the perspective of chaos theory, which allows infinitely small and the distances between major points, or topics, configuration of the attractor strange. It also signs and signals, such as hair styles, clothing, gestures and jewelry, web pages, and c (i) members (teeth), more also devoid of any known anchors, traditional societies – traditional initial conditions of man. Instead, these signs and signals increasingly occur in the production, consumption and communication which transcend national differences, language and ethnicity.
This uniformity of ground and signal, fourth, another characteristic flash of strange attractors also repeatedly demonstrated by physical experiments. It is a continuous power spectrum. When a medium changed, a fluid, for example, is excited beyond a certain threshold, these signals measurable change strongly continuous discontinuous to continuous. At the extreme level of excitement, the signals are continuous. Rather than showing peaks and valleys throughout the discrete signal, the bulk of the signal is continuous, undifferentiated "Noise" (Brown 135; McBurnett (2) 43-5). Urban areas where human activities will wake up in twenty-four hours per day are examples of such social "white noise". This noise has the power to eclipse bird songs, sounds of wind, and a lot of human speech. In urban areas, everyone and everything sounds and noises are folded on each other and mixed in its class. This mixture produces a variety of aural experiences that can not be predicted from knowing the origin and quality of a particular sound – the emergence and synergy – in a blur and white noise in which no sound dominates even though no sound can be temporarily more or less distinct. In fact, the blur of noise in urban obscures not only the origins but also the dynamics (Brown 123; Dendrinos 241; McBurnett (1) 171-5, 185, 190). Is the urban dynamic of "white noise" random, stochastic, chaotic or another type of conceptual use of the theory that chaos may illuminate better than other types of control concepts? I will address this issue in my conclusion.
A continuous power spectrum relates to the sensitive dependence on initial conditions in the description, the appearance of chaos, destruction of old data and the creation of new information. Signals prior to the letter chaotic disappear and are replaced by broadband noise erratically punctuated. This feature connects oppression in the latter always involves injecting new energy into an existing system. destroy sites of life, destruction bodies and moving others to bury the dead and the living, then the clothes resocialization survivors injects new energy into the body and in their relationships with others.
Oppression not only subjects organs to new forms of energy, but also a new energy available to these organizations. It should be stressed here that the use of chaos theory does not lead to a simple reductionist view of power social or the social order. Social power may limit or it can release or it can do both in the same situation and by the same person. declines in the hegemony white, American, heterosexual, Christian men, books and chainsaws coupled with the empowerment of women, children, homosexuals, non-whites, non-Christians, non-Euro-Americans, hard drives, and endangered species show the oscillations of social power in order contemporary social.
Some other examples of this mixture and folding Gandhi are learning English law and English which he used to drive the British India, the Crazy Horse to learn to use a gun with which he killed invading soldiers, prisoners with weapons taken from the guards cons guards, prison riots, and students use computers to attack the military-industrial complex, university regulations or schools school dress codes. This feature variable energy spectra induced by continuous power – as if the law of conservation of energy social functioning were to preserve the social power regardless of who he is or what his hands do not change the existing social order – shows that some types of social power persist through interruption.
Two examples of social power are the persistent physical structure of a modern prison and the legal structure temporal and modern mass education. In the first case, the body of an inmate is disciplined twenty-four hours per day through the environment of bars, walls, locked doors, and fences with or without other forms of individual human presence. In the latter case, people from six to sixteen years of age are constantly disciplined by a linear system that locks each day of the calendar year with its own major events, such as the start and after school, neighborhoods, the terms and semesters.
A closer look at a fluid excited strengthen the connections just mentioned. When Heat is applied to water in an open container of water moves slowly until there is a sharp transition to boil. boiling can be understood as the creation of infinite surface in finite volume. Water is a finite space. The elements of water, water molecules will remain forever separate but move more quickly. Since the molecules can not become in the other and since they can not stop moving, they must have the infinite surface. They get infinite surface by the rolling of the water is a process of stretching and folding of fluid.
The water mixes, bends and stretches endlessly and unpredictably. boiling can be heard In addition, the release of thermal energy to the air. The heated water is more exposed to the surface to the air, more heat released. If the heat is off of the water will stop boiling and return to its pre-chaotic, the rest system. If Heat continues spraying water slowly until the container is empty.
There are two phases of this event info where the old, the foregoing information is destroyed and the new, later, is created. The first is the transition from rest to boil. The second is the transition from the boiling steam. All information on the resting positions of water molecules disappears boil. All information on the positions of boiling water molecules disappears in evaporation. It is impossible to verify by observing the water molecules in the atmosphere when and where these molecules were parts of a body fluid of water or to boil or rest.
Many individuals and groups may be regarded as culturally vaporized. It is impossible to observe people in the streets to determine where and when these people or their ancestors were members of groups that could be considered ethnically homogeneous tribes, clans or cultures. As the boundaries of changing the world of nations, that data transfer technologies dissolve the barriers of time, space and place, War and environmental degradation persist, such as droughts, floods, volcanoes, and population displacement, human beings become more rights are culturally vaporized.
The cultural condition of vaporization, in addition, has three simultaneous expansion – increasing human population, the increase in cities and increasing the standardization by the extension of centralized, bureaucratic control figures more and more people and in more details of human life. Parallel to these developments is the contraction of total per capita living space within this contraction contraction of a new living space not standardized.
Unstandardized unoppressed living space can be a space of resistance, armed or not, written or unwritten. In the U.S., for example, where the rhetoric of individuality is continuously embedded in the gestures of compliance, the only area of life unoppressed many is their bodies. Thus, resistance to oppression as a constraint of homogeneity, the normalization constraint without the release of individualization – standardization as the erasure the difference – seems like tattoos, piercings, jewelry, hair-do, makeup, cars, clothes, music, dialects, food, and gestures. But the information conveyed by this diversity has no clear relationship or deterministic initial conditions of resistance, that is their ancestors, indigenous groups, or their homes. Resistance by differentiating the appearance of his body is a response to anonymity and depersonalization. It bends to the person further into the strange attractor of change.
At the same time, however, that modern power is "uniform" and standardization of all of us, the modern industrial economy is diversifying and differentiating. If twenty different types of modem, a thirty brands sports shoes, fifty different types of car, or several hundreds of different shades of lipstick are not sufficient, others may be invented and produced. The operations of modern social power over human beings and contemporary social move in opposite directions simultaneously: towards greater uniformity and greater diversity.
Expansion and individualized treatment options occurs with the contraction of living space per capita and per capita living space unoppressed. The operations of oppression can be said to have two asymptotic limits. In a sense, oppression tends to make everyone the same, in the other direction, it tends to make everyone different. For example, short hair, shoes leather low heels, pants, shirt and a windbreaker could describe a man or a woman of almost any society on earth. But the United States, where unisex look is common, everyone of age has a unique number social security number, driver's license only, and many people also phone numbers and addresses unique.
And paths crossing
We can still approach the chaos to order Social work in chaos theory applied to physical phenomena and mathematical echoes the simultaneous interpenetration contexts of social life. We contexts attractor and customary practices of contexts to basins of attraction. A basin of attraction is a set of initial conditions in phase space which leads to an attractor or a context. These initial conditions are usually related, such as practical group, and form a continuous subspace in some major cultural phase space.
Posted by Peter Yam in March 1994 issue of Scientific American, the numerical experiments by Edward Ott and John C. Sommerer, in which a particle moving in a friction surface is sometimes pushed, "led to the uncertainty of which of the two attractors" of particle hunting, because one of the tanks is filled with pieces other Basin. "Under Yam, researchers found that, so far from pools simply overlap each other by their edges or at penetration of another space, "all fields in a basin, regardless of size, contents of other parts of the basin in its midst."
This research supports the theory of chaos as a good representation not only of certain practices, but also contexts interpenetrating by mixing and folding. All human practices are accumulations of other practices. Any practice can either be broken down into small practices with more or less history and more practical or blended with more or less history. For example, learning to use a computer keyboard implies the fine coordination of the use of different fingers separately, and the raw skills using equipment operating at electricity, such as plugging in a sheet and turning on a switch. What is meant by tradition, custom and habit is precisely a layering–mixing/folding–process by which information is compressed by repeated use and application forms and eroded forms are used – reproducible – over long periods of time and in different spaces. The different areas of the guard and prisoner, patient and physician, or the consumer and the producer are of different contexts – attractors – that continues to act in and on the other.
Paradoxically, the decomposability practices of man corresponds to the criterion nondecomposability chaotic systems: "The chaotic systems are indecomposable, because they can not be decomposed into two sub-systems that do not interact; This is due to topological transitivity "(Richards 96). This can be understood mathematically as the requirement that "[equations] n onlinear differential, and the phenomena or problems that describe, must be considered as a whole, which, as nondecomposable "(Kiel and Elliott 4; see also Jaditz 69). For example, a bicycle can be regarded as a combination of skills using the large muscles of the legs and arms, or skills using small muscles hands, feet and eyes, or social sensitivities involving posture, appearance and style. Each of these three combinations can be viewed separately as verbal or quantitative same event. However, none of them can be lived, experienced, or reprints. They all come with each other, they interact with the impact, and are influenced by them. However finely subsystem involved in cycling – or using a computer, singing, swimming, painting, riveting – is described as a distinct jurisdiction consistent or ability, it is always (already) interaction with all other systems. Indeed, the growing popularity over the last decades of terms such as "interpersonal relations", "interaction", "Interconnection" and "interpenetration" suggests that the theory of chaos, at least for a contemporary and imagination is a way quite credible to address the understanding of social phenomena.
See the oral and written traditions in different contexts – as interpenetrating sites, such as interaction systems – suggests that the object of social science, whether synchronically or diachronically extended stacked, may be considered as dissipative systems. The ongoing maintenance, repair and reconstruction needs from cell body to clothing to transit systems to software configurations seems to leave little doubt that the conditions of human life are essentially dissipative rather that conservative systems. By examining the challenges of managing complex systems, says De Greene
A socio-technical or technical-economic macrosystem is a dissipative structure in the sense that quality inputs (energy and matter) are converted into low quality products such as heat and waste, with a increasing disorder and entropy. In this overall process, of course, poor quality raw materials are processed in high quality finished products, but they eventually break down, entropy additional return. (287)
If this is reasonable, he said the attempt approach to the social order on the conceptual to the theory of chaos. As Hao Bai-Lin II explains in Chaos, "it is dissipation realizing compression] contraction [description] [the information in a natural way: a large number of modes of extinction due to dissipation, only those covering the attractor must be taken into account in modeling [sic] system "(6). Dispel – the degradation of depreciation, degeneration, die-off, extinction – can be seen as the means by which normally and naturally functioning social systems and natural stabilize the long-term function against the short-term volatility caused by the proliferation of differences. Dissipation in this sense, according Hao, "the causes of the volume representing the initial state in phase space contracts in the process of evolution "(19).
Swings in the practices of all kinds are well known and widely documented (Shils). Oscillations are identified as such in a field of possibilities whose boundaries are defined by practitioners of tolerance of difference. A range of tolerable difference exists, as I describe in detail elsewhere (Cornberg (1)), not as a table statistics or generalization, quantification unless action is specifically sought, but as a set of preferences enacted and reenacted contexts. The acceptable range of the phase difference or defines a state space in social life; enactment and recovery of preferences trajectories is the practice. When a path does not extend over the attractor, it turns off.
The search for Ott and Sommerer also encourages us to seek what we have already found other ways – embedded, integrated, and contexts encaptic or attractors. The critical attractor of all human group is reproduction. Examples of human groups are families, tribes, nations and societies. All living things must reproduce their species to survive, but humans have the additional task of reproducing the practices not only offspring. reproduction, such as the progeny human transmission of the language, and continuity of traditions, all the display information compression. The information necessary to complete practice is repeated and varied achievements through the practice both as texts and learning events for others. At any time identifiable from a change in practice can take place and can be taken instead of the previous version. above is available now by the memory devices of the group. There is no guarantee of any such memory device, oral, written or electronic other versions do not exist. Groups of human life to resist the cuts infinitization preferences with tradition.
An acceptable range of difference is noticeable changes in all these situations. Intolerable make various other behaviors that are also practical, such as indifference, correction, ridicule, criticism, rejection, denial, censorship, repression, censorship, repression, exile, conflict and war. If a practice regardless of the time, and regardless of where it falls within the acceptable range of difference, does not lead to reproduction of the energy Group A, then it becomes a passage on and off. A transitional regime is a path that does not cover the attractor long or far enough to repeat or reproduce. A farmer, Ott and Yorke said in an article on the dimension of chaotic attractors, "Roughly speaking, an attractor is a something that "attracts" the initial conditions of a region around it once crossings have disappeared "(154). Small towns in industrialized countries generally have a variety of private businesses and public services. parameters such as location, economics, the base tax, climate, ethnicity and shape of basins of attraction layer – interpenetrate or intersect – the other as determinants of such activities and to continue or seem to appear and disappear in such contexts.
A case study or sample in-depth interview of such a situation would be a phase portrait of the attractor. Contained in a particular piece of information in such a portrait would be information on other aspects of the social situation. We know, for example, that the personal interview on preferences such that candidates or bond may also give us information on language use, gestures, and aspects of social life such as class relations and discrimination. According to Hao, "the basic idea is this: because of nonlinear interactions in the system of these samples information [taken different times] contains information on other variables as well and we should be able to extract this information "of a Such a set of samples (53). This co-occurrence, simultaneity, or the interpenetration of the data also shows that the power Social combines compression and persistence in the social order.
Homelessness is a powerful contemporary example and indicator schemes life of the man who, with increasing regularity, the distinction between transients and non-transitory. The fact that small communities have an impact least sustainable of homelessness compared to large towns, cities and metropolitan areas suggests that the trajectories of homeless people are attracted by pools of human life in which several basins – for example, Ott and Sommerer – contain enough pieces to each other to allow – to tolerate differences in their lineup – the conditions of life very different.
But the documents with each other implies substantial rather than discontinuities in the process of cosmetic and social structure. Highly divergent practices in turn are smaller attractors in the great attraction of the metropolis. Patterns of homeness and homelessness would be expected to show a variety of trajectories of practice, such as correlations between the incidence of homelessness and the existence of soups, the availability of free housing, locking the doors of houses, fences land, zoning discrimination, ownership of small arms, or ownership of the guard dogs. On these social sites, the disappearance of a transient may be the death of a person, as the extinction of a practice may be the death of a practitioner. But since that a transient is a path that does not cover the attractor long enough or far enough to repeat, then how long or far enough? What causes a practice to persist and another to withdraw?
Prediction and social change
Report this question in terms of causality hastens the aspect of prediction that arises naturally in any attempt to apply social issues and grounded theory developed in the numerical experiments and physical. It is a fact of growing importance for all branches of science that most systems we face are nonlinear. The non-linearity of the social order can be understood as the interpenetration of contexts discussed in connection with the search for Ott and Sommerer. This characteristic of interpenetration is directly and deeply on the possibility using the theory of chaos mathematics to describe social science data.
social science data are derived from phenomena social and social phenomena are contextual. If contexts are interwoven, and phenomena in the social sciences have always already begun, in multiple non-trivial sense, before being observed, recorded, and quantified in a sample in the social sciences in particular. The early and late observation periods are dictated to the social scientist by the data available. assumptions can be Issued on how a person or a particular situation got to where he is when it is observed, but these assumptions can not give us specific, unique, quantitative terms. Given that this situation obtains throughout the analysis of social science data, it is impossible determine the initial conditions of these phenomena with the uniqueness and precision necessary to use the measures put in place Mathematical chaos, as spectral analysis, Lyapunov exponents, autocorrelation functions, the power law distributions, and others (Kiel and Elliot 8-10, 51, 53). If these calculations are not possible, it is impossible to say with mathematical certainty and clarity that chaos exists in a particular set of social scientific data.
This limitation on the predictability of chaos measures, chaos theory has another characteristic that limits strongly its applicability to quantitative social science data: homogeneity.
Content disrupted fluid amplified charges electric, atmospheric gases, and chemicals in all liquid mixtures shows a homogeneity that is precisely suited to mathematical description, but that is nowhere in social life. mathematical manipulations, such as the construction of the Mandelbrot set and the generation Feigenbaum number, also homogeneity that variations symbol system of mathematics. However, "very rarely, if ever, are social systems comprising components similar to a very homogeneous behavior "(Dendrinos 240-1). The only way a similar consistency can be obtained in the social science data is to quantify some aspects of social life such as divorce rates, the choices of voters, and the impact disease. Once the specific quantities are obtained and simulations can be constructed that exhibit characteristics of chaos.
But simulations ask all arbitrary, artificial initial conditions that do not represent or ongoingness, historicity, or the livingness phenomena from which quantitative data are extracted. For example, in a presentation of its Universal Card to study the dynamics of the activity human settlements, Dendrinos said that "a change of parameter values or initial conditions can lead to a new frame, m potentially characterized by a qualitatively different dynamic … (253). Without doubt, there is no end to the possibilities in abstract such a model. According Dendrinos, "a weakness" in the current uses of chaos theory for the mathematical modeling in economics is "that, under minor modifications, but good in the specification, these models can reproduce almost anything analyst wants to produce by theoretical deduction "(238)!
But what constitutes the initial conditions of human settlement or even the action human in the first place? Is an initial condition that a shaman read the entrails of a bird and led a group to settle in a cave? Or was it the fact that the group had only two days left of food and winter approaching? Or was it the familiar appearance of a star in a strange area in the night sky? Or was it the competition between a leader and a deputy chief who was in the best provider for the group? Suppose it was considered the first condition was for the group to settle in a cave in particular. In this sense, then, was that the condition ? Then he uses a "initial condition" implies that he had no history? Is it not possible that the chief has allowed the deputy chief to select the cave at that time especially because the chef had already decided to retire from active leadership, or because the sub-chief had promised rewards certain subjects? In both cases, there is another condition backward, forward, forward, or bent in the first. Indeed, how is it possible to give any kind of sense of the term "original" in this situation?
There is a pervasive silence in the literature the fundamental question of how to translate accurately and efficiently the concept of initial conditions of physical experiments and numerical social scientific observation, sampling, and description. The appearance of chaos in mathematical simulations using quantitative data in social sciences must be regarded with extreme caution. Certainly, the chaotic dynamics with features can be produced from many types of data Figures in the social sciences. But the chaos of an artifact of the simulation or is there an explanation of the reality of social life from which the quantitative data are extracted?
Such consideration has led Harvey and Reed argue that the following rule number one warning on the application of chaos theory to social science:
1. Predictive, statistical, and modeling methods iconological chaos confined to these levels ontological in which collective social phenomena can be legitimately treated as a phenomenon of statistical aggregation, which is, as consisting of additives, countable, and interchangeable individual units. (314)
Since improvement the concrete social welfare have not yet been achieved using the chaos theory (Berry and Kim 216; Brown 128; Jaditz 86 Rosser 209) I am inclined to think this time with a synthetic Dendrinos comment that "only the most important contribution chaos mathematics is [to] science social is to demonstrate the presence of new features in dynamic social systems that theorists had never touched before "(238). Hence my purpose here to demonstrate the usefulness of radical chaos theory for understanding social order rather than to describe social science data mathematically.
Applications range
The social order of mixing and folding and will in extreme crises in the vaporization of the cultural definition of non-linearity and illustrates the interlocking contexts. Social order Viewed from this perspective is chaotic. Chaos that the social order also provides a way to understand the infinite degrees of freedom which characterize the actions humanities.
The infinitization of human freedom is not only due to an inherent characteristic of human nature, character or personality. It is a function of the fact that the choice of the man are still located in contexts that intersect to varying degrees infinitely large and complex in time and space. Each piece in another frame or a basin of attraction offers more choices and each different piece brings more songs with her. In addition, it seems clear that the only linear systems in social life are those of railways, as contracts that require the human will and energy in an attempt to establish and maintain order without modification, that is, without mixing and folding. boycotts, strikes, the renegotiation of contracts and collusion between inmates and guards, however, show that even in contexts these high stakes "social, there is no guarantee of linearity.
When we leave schemes lines established and implemented channels and corridors and between the edges, areas of transition and liminal spaces, in addition, the initial conditions of trajectories of man can not be determined with certainty. If they are, there was a reduction in deliberate and arbitrary – The collapse renormalization – degrees of freedom lived socially as options. Even with this reduction, the infinite preferably open to man in society reintroduce the uncertainties which still needs be reduced to meet the requirements of linearity. This superimposition of rhythmic oscillations recursive for mixing and folding and deliberate attempts at reducing linearization can be seen in four specific situations Name: Language 1. Endangered 2. Ponds moral Assassination 3. 4. Cyberspace.
Languages 1. Threatened. Off and since the late 70s, I did all kinds of projects with the Athabascan Indians in the interior of Alaska. One of these projects involved the construction of a survey to gather opinions from tribal members on preservation issues indigenous languages. There are nine Athabascan languages still in use in some form in the interior of Alaska. By area, the interior is slightly smaller than the state of Texas, contains the main drainages of the Yukon, Tanana, Koyukuk, Porcupine and Chandalar rivers, and supports more forty villages – Tribes – whose inhabitants derive ethnic peoples with previous Athabascan and Inupiat mixtures Yupik Eskimos, Aleuts and Indians. Most villages are accessible only by air, water or ice covered with snow. The large villages of population less than fifty nearly a thousand. They all have some form of electronic communication with other villages and towns and cities on the state highway system and other parts world.
All have some sort of public school facility in which the official language is English. English is the official language trade, public affairs, and most recreational activities such as basketball and bingo. In most villages within only a small number of people aged to maintain something like mastery of the native language, with more being partial, some speakers have learned the language is not interact with the natural family, but in a kind of classroom.
Based on this, Michael Krauss, who led Alaska Native Language Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Fairbanks, Alaska, for the last two decades, predicts that all these languages will be extinct by 2055. Krauss calls this prediction by including only native speakers, ie those who have learned the language as their first the language of birth. This qualification reflects the fact well attested by the Athabascan speakers sounded more than once used in these very agglutinative, rhythmic, and guttural languages have already disappeared or are too difficult for contemporary speakers to reproduce. With a disappearing voice lines, the disappearance Once the distinction between a well defined style of oratory and ceremony, and a vernacular style of current affairs is confirmed by the same stakeholders. The appearance of a village "English" also attests to a mixture ground to English in which the Athabascan languages fade Silence in shades of memory.
It is instructive, before attempting to link all this chaos theory, noting that the Interior Athabascan used to make rope from spruce roots, and heavy thread – sinew – from moose hide. They also used to catching fish in the traps of willow bent shoot birds with bows and arrows, and kill the burden is on the wooden spears with points resistance fire. Most teens, technology, non-metal industries have either disappeared or hobby, show-room, museum piece, or the frame. The new technology, based on metal, chemical and plastics, has made all the more tasks a lot safer in terms of risk to life and integrity physical, easier and more efficient in terms of human effort, more reliable in terms of success per attempt and more productive in terms of quantities purchased. The new Athabascan languages, from the older and adapted to a context in which information processing and transfer are much larger that respect, ceremony, and the maintenance of taboo, also seems to be increasingly easy to learn and simple to use.
Attractor Athabascan culture has changed. Its phase space now consists of office buildings with several floors of advanced electronic equipment Fairbanks satellite dishes with color televisions and the latest in snowmobiles and outboard motors in the villages. The trajectories of an old, slower, language more complex, and an old, slower, materials technology less reliable, hunting and collecting their basin of attraction, do not cover the attractor new. The result is that they become crossing with varying degrees and types of "death".
The languages that cover the national arts and international, political, economic and military attractors are English, French, German, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Arabic and Japanese. History each language shows a contraction of the state space with a subsequent decrease in diversity. A contraction decreases the diversity because, as transients die out, there are fewer possible paths to a particular attractor. The unification of the Chinese language, for example, began more than two thousand years ago. The creation of a standard English, French and Spanish have also been achieved at the expense of many local variations which some, such as Catalan and Basque, have become smaller attractors local energy simply to survive, but many have long since ceased to exist. Only in the last decade, according to my own sources in the region, Athabascan of Interior Alaska have begun to consider unification as a strategy for preserving the language.
2. Ponds morale. Characteristics of linguistic areas are displayed by basins morale. The last century of life in Taipei, Taiwan offers a striking example of intercultural contact and mixing. The moral experience of youth Taipei has been the subject of my doctoral thesis and two articles ((2) and (3)) which condenses the contents of the thesis to a wider audience. I take position that the moral experience of contemporary urban youth in Taiwan – Taipei – can best be understood in terms of three sites in interaction: family, street and school. Based on historical considerations which include flows to permanently Chinese classical and flows involving European, Japanese and Civilization America, the pond or moral context of each attractor can be characterized as the family hierarchy, street / flow, and school / Competition.
When young people in Traverse Taipei, live, and (re) create each site during the day, they are the bearers of parts each basin of this layer recursively each other in the oscillations during the attitude and behavior. They are family deference hierarchically ordered in older children and adults in the street and school. They carry a school contest egalitarian school and family. From the street, they carry a fluid, individualized sense of freedom and responsibility in both the family and school. As layers, carriers recursive practices that are still affected by their peers and by adults, young people experience social reality as porous.
The porosity can be understood as a metric on the state space of the company. The degree of porosity – interpenetration mixing/folding– is a good indicator of the degree of chaos in society.
The porosity of the space, in addition, it is holographic in the direction indicated by Ott and research Sommerer showing that each tank contained bits of other basins. Connecting trails other attractors in the social order is in Taipei a small part of that order, for example, a classroom, a living room, or a bus stop. For example, while bus riders in Taipei are generally not in line for the bus door, students in school uniform, although outside the school grounds and skill of applicator school discipline, often to the line. However, the relationships among the pieces of attractors and attractors are rarely linear, they are fractal in the sense of having broken relationships or split between the parties, rather than being closely linked in linear dimensions. Porous space holofractic office. The possibility of forecasting in a basin of attraction as a family or school, decreases with increasing porosity of social life in which the pelvis is built.
Taipei has been one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Asia for nearly a century. A decrease of more indigenous or imported from Taiwan Chinese models happened at the same time an increase in habits from other ethnic sources, whether in technology, language, dress, dance, customs, religion and marriage customs. In language For example, the Chinese writing used in Taipei has become more complicated both because of the different types of characters used there and the continent and due to the accumulation of elements of other languages. Again, as in the interior of Alaska, a contraction of phase space, which indicates the disappearance of some trajectories pass of practice that does not cover the attractor of social change, with an expansion phase space as the birth of new contexts in new trajectories of practice representing different mixtures of exogenous and indigenous.
An application of chaos theory to social issues, as evidenced by Taiwan and the Interior of Alaska, endorsed the conclusions of historical linguistics that is not simple, inevitable path from old to new more complex language simple, or vice versa. It also supports Results of social science research that increases the options for the attitude and behavior is one of the main events in the complex changes in the social order of the last century, collectively known as modernization. This is not a linear decrease in options until a certain point, after which new options may be more abundant and are put in place. Rather, there is a decrease in certain types options that releases energy for cultural simultaneous increase in other types.
The crucible of contact with power exogenous forcing and releases, discharges and suppressed and destroyed and amplifies the power indigenous contains interactions that fades into the theory will determine What kind of predictability, if any, are possible in such spaces. It seems indisputable that there is a strong correlation between the availability of culture or unrelated power idle, either from external sources or rejected by sources inside, and the emergence of regimes chaotic culture. That the cultural power takes the form of free firearms, drugs and money, or communication, transportation and production technologies, it does not automatically and smoothly reproduce indigenous practices and models. Its introduction is an intervention that induces interference patterns. The interference patterns of time, bifurcate, and differ in orders or several basins, in a city like Taiwan, include new millionaires, the depression and suicide, new environmental activism, street crime without precedent, a clean, quiet electrorail system, and some of the worst air pollution in the world. As the unprecedented, novel, new, and there is no intention to increase scope and frequency, the complexity becomes chaos.
3. Assassination. A brief example of another country comes from Mexico, shortly after the assassination the PRI presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio in Tijuana. interviewed for the New York Times, March 27 issue by Tim Golden, Jesús Cantú, editor where the independent newspaper "had been" bombing two weeks' ago, shared a widespread sense that murder had shown weakness in the political system of Mexico "that once seemed indestructible." In terms of chaos, such a change is emerging porosity. Space laminar state of Mexico expressed in turbulence with a dramatic increase of the possible trajectories of social and political practice. Not accident or surprise, the point of view of chaos theory, the Mayan uprising in the south happened shortly before the assassination. As done Cantú remarked: "Do you feel now, as anything can happen" (Golden 3).
4. Cyberspace. The electronic travel is addictive – When power is cut travel stops. As addictive, we must constantly recreated. The qualities he has the qualities given by those who make, make, and use it – Aryans to Aryan, environmentalists are the environment, investors are investing. He has no independent existence of the natural, the cable software known as imagination. Why then cyberspace exist at all?
This question is easier to answer in the streets of Taipei on the tundra of Alaska. Taiwan has a population density of the second largest in the world. When population density combined with multiple, flexible, more avenues of expression, the result of new spaces of man. When the density combined with limited physical space, like an island as Taiwan, a nation like the United States, or a planet like Earth, compression takes place.
Compression involves a multitude of actions on the actions of bending and mixing. Compression destroys information and creates information. Both process, some types of space are created to not only take into account the creative and destructive processes, but also to contain the destroyed and created information. Where to go when a document is sacked? Where to go when a document is cached? Where to go when a document is stored or saved? Where does it go when a document is sent by email, fax, print, or by mail? Each process requires a some type of space.
Compression creates space by outsourcing quantity. Compression of human beings creates more finely spaces facets of the man. At the same time, the growth of human beings, expanding their personal horizons geographical, and increased their physical properties needs to create more space. Humans now have more living space. Many people react to compression land areas by moving more and more remote in space and the ocean floor.
Cyberspace is a new type of space of life that combines the distance of the satellite to the intimacy of home computers, and the standardization of hardware and software with the individualization of preferences in almost all aspects of the environment. It is in continuity with the play space, art space, recreational space, and ceremonial space. While cyberspace is a medium of communication. Email is in continuity with other media such as talking, singing, dancing, lights, drums, letters, messengers, telephones, microwaves, and fax. But email is a small part of cyberspace. Impersonal, under private control, data transmission and self-stimulation cyberplay are two other main uses that show that cyberspace is a growing need for new types of living space unoppressed. Indeed, resistance to official regulations cyberusers shows how cyberspace is continuous with the traditional spaces of the individual play, recreation and expression.
The changes described above in languages, customs, politics and human space are not linear, laminar, and sequential. They are like a quiver of arrows being shot in all directions at once. The basic attractor of reproduction in an intercultural context illuminates this phenomenon because people must continue to talk, dress, marry and so on in order to survive regardless of ethnic stamp out the language, dress, and customs. But if, in the process of reproduction, increases the power available at a growing rate and options are multiplying faster than the old options may change, then contracts the phase space and extends along certain trajectories endangered and others covering the new attractor.
The ancient practices with the enactment of linking food with a duration Aboriginal power exogenous new attractor. Those who are not, not even as a museum or tourist attractions, off. The recent practice with the enactment of linking food exogenous with a duration Aboriginal power the new attractor. Those who are resisted and excluded. How long is long enough and How far is far enough? In terms of modes of human life, it is a question of how people use different types of power available to them.
In physical terms, the onset of chaos in physics experiments is achieved through the addition of certain types of energy systems – Chemical, mechanical, electrical, etc. – that are capable of different modes of behavior. These systems are not physical chaos by themselves. They arrive by receiving and processing the energy that the water of rest described above boils by receiving and processing thermal energy. They are physically engine, deterministic systems. They have plans of behavior characteristics, including the transition to turbulence and chaos, are determined by manipulating certain parameters such as temperature, speed, and voltage.
systems Digital is more difficult to describe in concrete terms, but they are too deterministic. In processes such as production of the Mandelbrot set Feigenbaum constant or a finite set digital entity is subject repeatedly recursive overlays or folds to generally bifurcatory oscillatory behavior occurs. Again, the figures are not in chaos by themselves. The energy can manipulate
