What do you think of William faulkner and his work?
What is your favorite short story or book of his, and why? you recommend?
I think he was a genius – and a drunkard. Even drunk, he could write like anyone else. My favorite has to be "The Sound and the Fury." It is difficult to read, but so rewarding. I taught a few times, and some of my students I was finally pardoned by assigning. Here is an excellent summary: "The Sound and the Fury, published in October 1929, was Faulkner's fourth novel – and clearly his first work of genius. Now considered one of the strongest American contributions to the fiction of modernity, it has attracted countless critical interpretations. In writing the novel, Faulkner has been a creative and absorbing passion he would never forget, "he said The Sound and the Fury, "is the book I tend to feel. I could not leave him alone, and I never could tell him the right, but I tried hard and I would like to try again, but I'd probably still fail. "The novel tells the story of four different perspectives, the disintegration a southern family. The father is cynical and passive, and if he loves his children, he drank himself to death, disabled mother has no love for his children and continuous demands that it be supported; Benjy, the retarded son of his mother's shame, is castrated after he started to sexual behavior; Quentin, the son and neurotic romantic, off to Harvard to complete the vow throughout his mother and committed suicide ago, Caddy, the only daughter, became pregnant while still a teenager and quickly married a man who turns out of the house when he discovers that their child is not hers, Jason, the favorite of his mother, lost his chance at a lucrative job when Caddy's marriage fails and is reduced to support the family by working in a general store. Caddy's daughter – named after his brother Quentin – is high in the Compson household unfortunate though everyone is allowed to pronounce the name of his mother. She has revenge on his uncle Jason when she stole the $ 7,000 he raised by diverting his mother and remittances Quentin by Caddy. The family is supported and cared for by a family of black servants, led and held together by the matriarch Dilsey. Because of its experimental style, The Sound and the Fury presents a challenge to readers. In 1929, Faulkner had given up to please editors and reviewers, and as the critic Albert J. Guerard noted, seemed now to "write only for himself and some happy." Traditional aspects of the novel, as display, plot and character development are set aside to try to find a narrative form that could represent the realities of mental chaos, the fluidity of time and memory, and interlacing of the same painful distinct family life. Although sometimes the subject of Faulkner may seem to be so flawed barely controlled in all languages, The Sound and the Fury reached heights and depths of expression are truly breathtaking: it is an unforgettable work that richly deserves the efforts of the reader. "I very strongly recommend – but I'll have a bit of reading around. For news, I'll have to go with "Tonight the Sun." (Although "A Rose for Emily" is delivered in a close second). He stayed in my mind since I read it several years ago. Here is a brief and partial examination: "To anyone who reads Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury, "Tonight the Sun" provides an excellent introduction to the novel: Every character in it retains the same features they have more work. The title of "That Evening Sun" refers to a popular black spiritual that begins, "Lord, Lord, I hate to see the sun Evening falls, "which implies that when the sun goes down, death is sure to follow. Thus, at the end of the short story by Faulkner, although some characters are not convinced that Nancy's husband, Jesus, is waiting outside his cabin to kill her, we suspect he is close by, and will probably Nancy slain with his razor before the night is over. The sun is feared by the singer of the spiritual and as Nancy. Many critics refer to "This Evening Sun" as one of the finest examples of narrative point of view. The story is narrated by Quentin Compson, whose voice Faulkner uses two distinct periods in the life of the child. Firstly, we have 24 years Quentin remember an episode 15 years on fears of Nancy Jesus. This point of view of introduction is followed by the narrative voice of 9 years, Quentin, who remembers the episode as he known at that time. In this story we have the contrasting emotions of adults voice of Nancy and Mr. Compson, Quentin's father. "Again, highly recommended.

Faulkner $35 william faulkner (1897-1962) remains the pre- eminent literary chronicler of the American South and a giant of American arts and letters. Creatively obsessed with problems of race, identity, power, politics, and family dynamics, he wrote novels, stories, and lectures that continue to shape our understanding of the region's promises and problems. His experiments and inventions in form and style have influenced generations of writers. Originally published in 1974 as a two-volume edition and extensively updated and condensed in a 1991 reissue, Joseph Blotner's Faulkner: A biography remains the quintessential resource on the Nobel laureate's life and work. The Chicago Tribune said, "This is an overwhelming book, indispensable for anyone interested in the life and works of our greatest contemporary novelist." That invaluable 1991 edition is now back in print. Blotner, a friend and one-time colleague of Faulkner's, brings a vivid, personalized tone to the biography, as well as a sense of masterful, comprehensive scholarship. Using letters, inter-views, reminiscences, critical work, and other primary sources, Blotner creates a detailed and nuanced portrait of Faulkner from his birth to his death. The revision of the original 1974 biogra-phy incorporates commentary on the plethora of Faulkner criticism, family memoirs, and post-humously published works that appeared in the wake of the first version. It also examines collections of letters and other materials that only came to light after the original publication. Featuring a detailed chronology of Faulkner's life and a genealogical chart of his family, Faulkner is authoritative and essential both for literary scholars and for anyone wanting to know about the life of one of the nation's foremost authors. Blotner's masterpiece is the template for all biographical work on the acclaimed writer. Joseph Blotner, Charlottesville, Virginia, is professor emeritus of English at University of Michigan and the author of several books, including Robert Penn Warren: A Biography, The Modern American Political Novel, and The Fiction of J. D. Salinger. His work has appeared in the New York Times book review, Yale Review, American literature, and else-where. |

Reading Faulkner $25 Absalom, Absalom! has long been regarded as one of William Faulkner's most difficult, dense, and multilayered novels. It is, on one level, the story of Thomas Sutpen, an enigmatic stranger who came to Jefferson in the early 1830s to wrest his mansion out of the muddy bottoms of the north Mississippi wilderness. He was a man, Faulkner said, "who wanted sons and the sons destroyed him." On another level, the book narrates the tragedy that befalls the entire Sutpen family and that tragedy's legacy that continues well into the twentieth century and beyond. The novel's intricate, demanding prose style, and its haunting dramatization of the South's intricate, demanding history make it a masterpiece of twentieth-century American literature. Reading Faulkner: Absalom, Absalom! offers a close examination and interpretation of the novel. Here difficult words and cultural terms that might prove to be a problem for general readers are explained and keyed to page numbers in the definitive Faulkner text (Library of America and Vintage editions). The authors place Faulkner's novel in its historical context, while also connecting it to his other works. |

Aviation Lore in Faulkner $117 William Faulkner was an aviation cadet in Canada in the closing days of WW I. He later owned his own airplane, and even put on a few air shows. When he wrote of flying, as he often did, it was with a great deal of expertise but little concern for the edification of his readers. The result is that many of the five hundred or so passages dealing with aviation in his works are all but incomprehensible to the non-pilot. This work elucidates all the aeronautical references in Faulkner’s fiction and verse which might prove troublesome to the general reader. This monograph contains three main sections: An introduction to flight, designed especially for the non-technical reader and intended to provide enough background in aerodynamics and aircraft design to enable one to follow Faulkner’s argument intelligently; a brief biography of Faulkner as a pilot and aviation enthusiast; and a reader’s guide through the individual works in which aviation plays a part. |
