emily bronte biography
What is the most accurate biography of Emily Bronte?

There have been alot of books written about her. I was wondering if any of you have read any of these books? Also where can I find real photographs of Emily Bronte and her sisters Charolotte and Anne? Im having a hard time finding information on the internet. Thank you

Most biographies that you will find in your local library are accurate enough. But you’re right when you say you’re having a hard time finding information: there actually *isn’t* a lot of information about Emily Bronte at all. If she kept a diary it hasn’t been found (with the exception of one “diary paper” she wrote as a young lady), her letters are sparse…she’s a lot like jane austen in that way. More is found about the “Bronte Family” (Emily, Charlotte, Anne, and sometimes the brother Branwell). The most comprehensive biography that I’ve found is “The Brontes” by Juliet R.V. Barker. There is also a book called “Emily Bronte: The Chainless Soul” by Katharine Frank, and while it has aspects of biography, what it really does is set up her literary criticism about how Emily Bronte was Anorexic, or some other such nonsense.

Also, there is also a reason you are not finding “photos”. There was no photography in the north of England in the mid 1800s. Additionally, there is only one painting that features her prominently is on display at the National Gallery in London. An easy google search for “Images bronte” will turn this up. Notice the empty space in the middle of the painting? That’s where the brother Branwell was supposed to go. He was painting it himself as a “family portrait”, and could never get happy with his own image. He rubbed out his own image over and over, and now we’re left with no image of him at all.

I definately advise you to follow your nose with the Bronte sisters: you will not be sorry. But the internet is not the place to go for this. Go to your local library, and see what kind of biographies they have there. Also, a great way to get to know Emily (or any of her sisters) is by reading their books.

I have given you a list of reference sources below, but because I’m not sure what level you’re working on, they may or may not be appropriate. (If you’re in junior high these may be too hard for you, if you’re a graduate student, you may find some of them too easy), but they are at least a place to start.

Good luck, and I hope to find a future Bronteite in you!

Patrick Bronte

Patrick Bronte

Patrick Bronte (1777-1861) was the father of the famous ‘Bronte Sisters,’ Anne, Charlotte and Emily, three of Victorian England’s greatest novelists, but he was a fascinating man in his own right and not nearly such an unsympathetic character as Elizabeth Gaskell’s Life of Charlotte Bronte would have us believe.
