With a world population growing at an alarming rate and our natural resources per capita is decreasing every year, there is a growing concern for the conservation and sustainability. The industry has learned and many companies are responsible for finding ways to be less polluting and more diligent in their efforts to reduce their environmental footprint. For those of us in the graphic arts related industries of responsibility is particularly heavy. The printing industry is the third largest polluter behind the world * auto industry and manufacturing steel. Designers and marketers have the opportunity to play a key role in the transition towards sustainability by finding creative ways to communicate using less natural resources, specifying the methods of printing more environmentally friendly and choosing biodegradable or reusable materials. Here are some guidelines to follow:

1. Try to develop design solutions that have a strong visual impact, but little impact on the environment. The brochure must be printed, or a PDF is as effective?

2. Specify recycled paper with a grade post-consumer fiber high.

3. Specify recycled paper that has not been inked. The results of the deinking process toxic waste.

4. Where possible specify unbleached paper. bleaching results in the toxins that are harmful to wildlife.

5. Select uncoated paper stock.

6. Consider using tree-free paper. The articles are under development today using bamboo, Hemp and kenaf instead of wood.

7. Use a printer that prints with renewable vegetable-based inks.

8. Avoid using metals such as gold and metallic inks.

9. Avoid using synthetic adhesives. Some of these substances can take hundreds years to break.

10. Use the smallest possible size of paper for each project.

11. Ask your printer what size The most effective compensation for your work to avoid the waste of paper.

12. Consider using digital printing that eliminates movies and plates.

13. Skip the overpack. Is direct mail flyer must be sent in an envelope or can be self-mailing?

14. Substitute Cellulose plastic in window envelopes.

15. Choose manufacturers who use renewable energy to power their plants.
