Where Do You Buy Your college textbooks?

I am wondering where most students are buying their college textbooks.

I got fed up this semester and decided to find a cheaper alternative to my campus bookstore (VA Tech). I was just tired of getting ripped off (textbooks are pretty much a rip-off to begin with). I started using half.com http://www.half.com and amazon.com http://www.amazon.com , they had some pretty cheap used books if I looked hard enough- then I found a site that compared the prices at both of them and every other decent bookstore at the same time- Textbook411.com http://www.textbook411.com and I am finally able to afford my books and know that I am not getting ripped off.

I have also heard of some book swapping and renting programs but have never tried them personally- I was wondering what experiences and tips other people have for saving on textbooks.

At the college I went to, they had a program for those that were on a limited income or on scholarships or grants and didn’t have enough to buy the books from campus book store.

Basically it is this:

All the books were used and in fairly good shape and were donated by upperclassmen and they got credit for donating them on their accounts. Unlike where you take them back to the bookstore at the end of the semester for credit towards the next books you have to buy and where they didnt’ give you no where near enough to really matter.

BUT and here is the catch—-not just anyone could get books here, it was strictly for those on a limited income, kinda like getting free lunch in grade school. You had to get the forms filled out before first semester started and then submit them in time in order to find out if you were approved or not. If so then you were allowed to get the books here at a major discount, like 75% off or better. You were then required to return the books here after you were done with the classes so that they can then be passed on to others. If you didn’t return them you were charged 25.00 per book you don’t return. Which if you choose to keep the books, is not a bad deal as you could use them later on if need be.

You might want to see about getting this at your school by suggesting it to the student council or even the dean of the school. I thought this was a great thing for all the kids, it made college truely affordable for those that were on a fixed income.

Good luck to you. And if you have anymore questions about this or would like more details about it, just let me know. I would be happy to help.

Changing Histories: Japanese and South African Textbooks in Comparison (1945?1995)

Changing Histories: Japanese and South African Textbooks in Comparison (1945?1995)

$29.01

Hauptbeschreibung The teaching of history in South African and Japanese schools has attracted sustained criticism for the alleged attempts to conceal the controversial aspects of their countries’ past and to inculcate ideologies favourable to the ruling regimes. This book is the first attempt to systematically compare the ways in which education bureaucracy in both nations dealt with opposition and critics in the period from ca. 1945 to 1995, when both countries were dominated by single-party governments for most of the fifty years. The author argues that both South African and Japanese education bureaucracy did not overtly express its intentions in the curriculum documents or in the textbooks, but found ways to enhance its authority through a range of often subtle measures. A total of eight themes in 60 officially approved Standard 6 South African and Japanese middle-school history textbooks have been selected to demonstrate the changes and continuity. This work hopes to contribute to the existing literature of comparative history by drawing lessons that would probably not have emerged from the study of either country by itself.   Biographische Informationen Dr. Simone Lssig ist Professorin fr Neuere und Neueste Geschichte an der Technischen Universitt Braunschweig und leitet das Georg-Eckert-Institut fr Internationale Schulbuchforschung in Braunschweig. Beyond Compare is a remarkable work that offers a commentary on spiritual learning for the twenty-first century rooted in two classic texts from the Hindu and Christian traditions: the Essence of the Three Auspicious Mysteries by Sri Vedanta Desika and Treatise on the Love of God by St. Francis de Sales. In his commentary, Clooney achieves multiple goalsùthe book is a contribution to Christian spiritual theology, highlighting for today the beautiful insights into love by St. Francis de Sales (1567-1623), Doctor of the Church. At the same time it points out how even in our world of many religious paths, we can recover and deepen the ancient tradition of loving surrender into God's hands by opening ourselves to the wisdom of India and one of Hindu India's most famous traditions of loving God, explained to us by the south Indian Hindu theologian Sri Vedanta Desika (1268-1369). Clooney goes further, offering a comparative study of these classic works in which he self-consciously writes about the process of reading the two works and the impact this approach has on the reader. The good advice found through this deep engagement with these texts offers a deeper insight into how we can most fruitfully and spiritually think about religious pluralism in the 21st century, remaining open in heart and mind while loyal still to our own tradition. Not merely a book about loving surrender to God, Beyond Compare offers us the opportunity to advance along that path ourselves, learning from the wisdom of St. Francis de Sales and Sri Vedanta Desika, meditating on their two paths together, deepening our own love and willingness to surrender in love to God.

Technology is a key driver of educational innovation, and a variety of programmes focusing on investment in infrastructure, equipment, in-service training and digital learning resources have been established to promote its usage in primary and secondary schools. So far, little comparative analytical attention has been devoted to understanding how digital resources improve the quality of learning and to assessing the public policies that support their development and use, and the role played by other stakeholders like publishers, broadcasting companies and increasingly user communities. This publication aims to fill that gap by both reviewing and evaluating the process of systemic innovation. Drawing on case studies from five Nordic countries, the report assembles information on the knowledge bases and policy actors which impact each phase of this innovation process and the main factors which influence its success including governance, financing and user involvement.
