book reviews: How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild and Got a Life, by Kaavya Viswanathan

How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild and Got a Life may just be the most controversial book of the season. After all the hype the book got, though followed by the row on it being a plagiarized material, I was really looking forward towards reading the book. It had a numerous positive reviews to its credit, and for an onlooker it would have definitely looked like a book not to miss. To be very honest, I was thoroughly disappointed at the manner in which the tale twisted.

The story starts off weak the middle is dull and dragged out for value and the ending is predictable from almost halfway through the book. With a weak plot and a teen oriented story, Kaavya would have fared much better if she hadn’t put in all the very unnecessary details of puppy love amongst teenagers. The book appeared a written version of teenage dramas such as “she’s all that”, “not another teen movie” all centered about a nerdy girl, trying to seek attention. She then transforms into a ravishing beauty, and gets included in the “bitch gang” of college.

The book is no exception owing to the similar story line that it follows. Our female protagonist is a geek who cannot remember what she did for fun. Her parents who have most meticulously planned her life out with HOWGIH, plan out another HOWGAL for her, where they strive to transform her into a chic and endeavor towards getting her kissed. The story revolves around how opal change of look, makes her a style icon in school. How her closest of friends move away from her. How she desperately tries to manage her fashion gimmicks and studies.

The climax is when opal throws a party and her cell phone gets swapped with Priscilla, who is coolest girl in high school. HOWGIH and HOWGAL are revealed to the entire class. The story then moves onto how she loses the trust of the one person she truly loves. Whether the present depression will put her through the Harvard corridors or will they permanently damage the very cause of all this commotion. The answers to these are quite obvious.

Though the plot might be weak, Kaavya has a good narrative capability. The language of the book is simple and lucid. Her voice is fresh and funny. The charges of plagiarism were too harsh on her. Definitely the book didn’t have to be pulled of the stands!

Ever have a moment you wish you could undo? A wickedly brilliant tale of revenge, mystery, and fate, Antony Moore’s The Swap is at once a gripping thriller and a hilarious black comedy—a book for anyone who’s ever wondered what could have been. . . . Harvey Briscow—smoker, drinker, comic-shop owner—is facing another school reunion back in Cornwall. Having spent the last two decades second-guessing himself, Harvey isn’t thrilled at the prospect of showing his classmates the mess he’s made of his life. But this is Harvey’s twentieth reunion, a milestone that all but guarantees that Charles “Bleeder” Odd—the freakish reject who made off with Harvey’s now-priceless Superman One comic in a school-yard swap—will be in attendance. But when Harvey returns to Cornwall, hoping to retrieve his comic, he’s met with more than a few surprises. . . . Bleeder is now dazzlingly successful—and quite content to watch Harvey squirm, refusing to acknowledge their long-ago trade. And Harvey—fueled by drink and the promise of a beautiful woman—soon makes a fateful choice, one he instantly wishes he could undo. A dead body and an enraged husband further complicate matters . . . but there’s a silver lining in this strange chain of events: suddenly one bad swap is the least of Harvey’s regrets. . . . From the Trade paperback edition.

Cookie Swap!

Cookie Swap!

$10.07

Cookie swaps are joyful. Cookie swaps are social. Cookie swaps are hip yet old-school, trendy yet traditional. Cookie swaps are creative, inexpensive, DIY, and a great way to entertain. Cookie swaps are baking meets Stitch ‘n Bitch, with newspapers, magazines, and websites–including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Better Homes and Gardens, Real Simple, Family Fun, Southern Living, Kraft.com, and Ed Levine’s Serious Eats–all writing about the trend. Cookie Swap! captures all of this and more in an idea-packed, slightly sassy guide. On the one hand, it’s all about the swap: when to swap (Christmas, of course, and other holidays, but also birthdays, bridal showers, graduation parties, PTA meetings, and fund-raisers-or just at your next book club meeting). And how to swap-with a planner, cookie swap math guide (so everyone gets the same number of cookies), ideas for invitations, decorations, containers, and then, when the crumbs have settled, how to make a keepsake. On the other hand, it’s all about the cookies. Lauren Chattman is a former professional pastry chef and baking writer who’s put together a knockout collection of more than 60 delectable, easy-to-make, simple-to-sophisticated recipes covering every kind of cookie-from crowd-pleasing favorites like Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies and Pumpkin Cheesecake Brownies to unexpected treats like Flaky Cardamom Palmiers and Green Tea Sandwich Cookies with Almond Cream. Finally, the book ends with a chapter of drink recipes-such as Iced Irish Coffee, Mini Strawberry Milk Shakes and Juicy Sangria-because not every cookie wants milk.
