classic mystery books
Recommand some books for me to read.?

Okay, the stuff I like varies. I definetly DO not want to hear about vampire stories, I have never liked vampires, the Edward types or the more horror ones.
Okay what do I enjoy? I loved memoirs of a geisha, Sophie Kinsella books- the comedy of it is better than the romance, so don’t recommand something which has a cheesy romance in it. I would like a comedy romance rather than a romantic comedy if you get my idea. I also want something more on the mature side, I am not a teenager but a 22 year old, office going lady so want something to match that.
I also loosly like a supernatural mystery books, again give me something that is more classic and sensible rather than the modern rubbish you get today that are poorly developed and childish. If you do recommand something young adult fic, make it classy that can be enjoyed by all ages.
I think that’s about it.
Sorry, your highness, I meant recommend, I am at work so can’t spend too much time checking for mistakes

The Cat Who Walked Though Walls & Number Of The Beast both by Robert Heinlein that are both very good

As unlikely as the idea seems today to use the suspense-filled stories of Edgar Allan Poe as the basis for an album of rock tunes, listeners in the 1970s–who were barraged with such high-flown concepts during the heyday of prog-rock–turned the record into a major hit. The Project actually scored a Top 40 hit with “(The System of) Doctor Tarr and Professor Feather.” Thanks to FM radio overplay, h…

The Rescuers Down Under (A Walt Disney Classic) [VHS]

The Rescuers Down Under (A Walt Disney Classic) [VHS]

$5.49

No, this isn’t a quickie, direct-to-video sequel, cashing in on the success of the 1977 animated hit about adventurous mice, but a full-blown theatrical effort. This time around, Bernard (voiced by Bob Newhart) is trying to pop the question to Bianca (Eva Gabor) when they’re summoned to Australia, where a young boy has been kidnapped by a pallid, gray-faced poacher (who looks like and is voi…

The Great Mouse Detective [VHS]

The Great Mouse Detective [VHS]

$4.74

Just because Walt Disney created contemporary and traditional classics of animation doesn’t mean the studio is out of ideas–not by a long shot. The Great Mouse Detective is richly animated and offers a clever tale. It may not be as easily recognized a title as Aladdin or The Little Mermaid, but all three share the same director, Ron Clements. Originally released theatrically in 1986, the mystery…

Rosemary's Baby [VHS]

Rosemary’s Baby [VHS]

Psychological terrorism and supernatural horror have rarely been dramatized as effectively as in this classic 1968 thriller, masterfully adapted and directed by Roman Polanski from the chilling novel by Ira Levin. Rosemary (Mia Farrow) is a young, trusting housewife in New York whose actor husband (John Cassavetes), unbeknownst to her, has literally made a deal with the devil. In the thrall of a w…

Sherlock: Season One

$22.99

In the wake of Guy Ritchie’s reimagining, the BBC puts its own stamp on Arthur Conan Doyle’s sleuth–and sets him in a London filled with cell phones and laptops. In the pilot, director Paul McGuigan (a keen visual stylist) introduces Sherlock Holmes (Atonement’s Benedict Cumberbatch) as a “high-functioning sociopath” and Dr. John Watson (The Office’s Martin Freeman) as an army veteran with posttr…

Psycho (50th Anniversary
edition) [Blu-ray]

$10.44

At last–a great American movie available on video for the first time in its original aspect ratio. For all the slasher pictures that have ripped off Psycho (and particularly its classic set piece, the “shower scene”), nothing has ever matched the impact of the real thing. More than just a first-rate shocker full of thrills and suspense, Psycho is also an engrossing character study in which direct…

The Thing [Blu-ray]

The Thing [Blu-ray]

$8.62

Howard Hawks’s original 1951 production of The Thing from Another World can be glimpsed playing on a TV that fateful October evening in John Carpenter’s blockbuster hit, Halloween (1978). A few years later, Carpenter reteamed with his Escape from New York star Kurt Russell to do a remake. But while the first movie version of The Thing was in atmospheric black and white, Carpenter’s 1982 version is…

The Dr. Thorndyke Mystery Omnibus

The Dr. Thorndyke Mystery Omnibus

$5.99

First Three classic books Featuring “The Greatest Medico-Legal Detective Of All Time!” That’s what the Encyclopedia of Mystery and Detection hails R. Austin Freeman’s legendary fictional sleuth, Dr. John Evelyn Thorndyke, forensic scientist and attorney. Like Sherlock Holmes, he is concerned with spying out concrete clues from which he can build irrefutable evidence against those guilty of crimes like theft an murder. A resident of London’s Inner Temple district, Thorndyke is tall, slender, athletic, with a classic Grecian profie, in short, the handsomest of all the early fictional detectives. Incredible as his exploits may seem, Thorndyke and his appearance were modeled on Dr. Alfred Swaine Taylor an early expert and pioneer in medical jurisprudence. This inexpensive omnibus features the complete and unabridged reprinting of the first three mystery books featuring Dr. Thorndyke, including the first Thorndyke novel, The Red Thumb Mark (1907), the second, Dr. Thorndyke’s Cases 1909), and the third, The Eye of Osiris (1911). A not to be missed feast of mystery, detection, and suspense!

The Essential Mystery Lists

The Essential Mystery Lists

$9.99

The book is divided into three parts: Introduction (pp. 1-16); Mystery Awards (pp. 17-281); Classic or Best Lists (pp. 283-453); and Index (pp. 455-573). The Introduction has six sections or parts that deal with collecting mysteries, the process of creating these lists, how to use this resource, and a list of sources. The Mystery Awards has both the winners and nominees. There are other books available (in the past) that list winners, but none that list the nominees. The Classic or Best Lists have fifty lists for you to consider. Some of these are well known but sometimes hard to locate when you need to refer to them. Other lists have not been available in some years. Then I have some lists that were created just for this resource. Especially I want to share the Anthony Boucher lists from his annual review of the best books of the year in his column as reviewer for The San Francisco Chronicle, Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, and The New York Times from 1942 through Boucher's death in 1968. The Index section is divided into several sections: name of authors, short story titles, name of titles of books. Collectors will find this resource as an aid in their task. Others might want to read with a certain award field or best list in mind. Librarians might want to created lists for readers, offer display of books, etc. On the buttons to the left, you will find specific information about the book. Please, if you find areas in the text that we can improve on, correct, add further information, please go to the fifth button on the left and offer your suggestions. I am adding the 2008 nominees and then winners as the various groups and organizations make the information known. You can cut and paste that information for your use. Also, some information about a new column that I now write for Mystery News on "Real to Reel." Talking about a book and then the film adapted from the original source.
