Re: U.S. athletes have to apologize to the Chinese gov't: Is this really the story disgusts you?

Http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/beijing/cycling/news?slug=ap-cyc-cyclists-masks&prov=ap&type=lgns It disgusts me! If China is no excuse for U.S. families for children who have died in America because of their toys and other products toxic? Should they apologize for having athletes (which is the health and endurance is a priority) come to their capital polluted? Marc: The Chinese themselves often If masks because of pollution. So … Chinese people are "tough" too? And pollution in the worst city in America not even close to China bad air (as you often feel and taste, too)! "Wear" not "where"

I would not be surprised if the Chinese officials made pressure on the U.S. Olympic Committee or U.S. diplomats to "strongly recommended" the cyclists give an official apology. After all, the government American tendency to bow to the command of their "red" Chinese masters, and they do not want to bite the hand that feeds them (borrowing to perpetuate the conflict in the Middle East). Indeed, the Chinese people themselves, wear masks during the worst days of ozone or Beijing during one of their annual dust storms have become more frequent as a result of desertification, which, itself, results from overdevelopment and uncontrolled prevailing in the surrounding areas. Indeed, even the worst polluted U.S. cities (Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Houston and on any given day) pale compared to the average Chinese. Their factories have been accused of using chemicals and solvents that have been banned here in the U.S. Japan and Western Europe it is not surprising that 16 of the 20 worst polluted cities in the world are in China.

Children of Chinatown

Children of Chinatown

$62.95

Jorae challenges long-held notions of early Chinatown as a bachelor community by showing that families–and particularly children–played important roles in its daily life. Facing barriers of immigration exclusion, cultural dislocation, child labor, segregated schooling, crime, and violence, Chinese American children attempted to build a world for themselves on the margins of two cultures. Their story is part of the larger American story of the struggle to overcome racism and realize the ideal of equality.

Reading Development in Chinese Children

Reading Development in Chinese Children

$140

This text reviews both similarities and unique cultural, linguistic, and script differences of Chinese relative to alphabetic reading, and even across Chinese regions. Chinese reading acquisition relies upon children's strongly developing analytic skills, as highlighted here. These 16 chapters present state-of-the-art research on diverse aspects of Chinese children's reading development. This edited volume presents research on Chinese children's reading development across Chinese societies. authors from China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan, among others, present the latest findings on how Chinese children learn to read. Reading acquisition in Chinese involves some parameters typically not encountered in some other orthographies, such as English. For example, Chinese readers in different regions might speak different, mutually unintelligible languages, be taught to read with or without the aid of a phonetic coding system, and learn different scripts. This book both implicitly and explicitly considers these and other contextual issues in relation to developmental and cognitive factors involved in Chinese literacy acquisition. One of the clearest themes to emerge from this volume is that, across regions, Chinese children, despite lack of explicit teaching of phonetic or semantic character components, learn to read largely by integrating visible print-sound and print-meaning connections. Rather than learning to read Chinese characters by rote, as is sometimes mistakenly believed, these children are analytic learners. Chapters in this book also cover such topics as Chinese children's reading comprehension, cognitive characteristics of good and poor readers, and reading strategies of bilingual and biscriptal readers. This book is a useful reference for anyone interested in understanding either developing or skilled reading of Chinese or for those interested in literacy learning across cultures.

The Chinese

The Chinese

In The Chinese, Jasper Becker, China's premier western correspondent, strips the country of its myths and captures the Chinese as they really live. For nearly two decades Becker has lived in China, and reported from areas where most visitors do not reach. Here he is at his most candid, reporting from all over the country: from tiny, crowded homes in the swollen cities of the southeast rim to a vast, secret network of thousands of defense bunkers in the northwest. He exposes Chinese society in all of its layers: from remote, illiterate peasants; to the rising classes of businessmen; to local despots; the twenty grades of Party apparatchicks; to the dominant, comparatively small caste of Party leaders who are often ignorant of the people they rule. Becker lets the Chinese speak for themselves, in voices that are rich and moving. He teaches a great deal about the magnitude–and the false face–of China's vaunted economic boom, and further shows the pervasive institutionalized crime that has risen out of economic poverty. In all, Becker reveals a China very different than our long-held assumptions depict. The Chinese is the hidden story of people of the world's largest nation–a nation so poorly understood and so vital to the future.

$9.99

A tour-de-force by rising indy comics star Gene Yang, American Born Chinese tells the story of three apparently unrelated characters: Jin Wang, who moves to a new neighborhood with his family only to discover that he’s the only Chinese-American student at his new school; the powerful Monkey King, subject of one of the oldest and greatest Chinese fables; and Chin-Kee, a personification of the ultimate negative Chinese stereotype, who is ruining his cousin Danny’s life with his yearly visits. Their lives and stories come together with an unexpected twist in this action-packed modern fable. American Born Chinese is an amazing ride, all the way up to the astonishing climax.   American Born Chinese is a 2006 National Book Award Finalist for Young People’s Literature, the winner of the 2007 Eisner Award for Best Graphic Album: New, an Eisner Award nominee for Best Coloring and a 2007 Bank Street – Best children\’s book of the Year.
