Why are classic children fairy-tales so violent?

1. Hansel & Gretal were abandon in the forest by their parents and then were kept prisoner by a cannibalistic witch.
2. Snow White was nearly killed twice by the evil queen.
3. Cinderella was treated like a slave by her ugly step sisters.
etc.

A lot of them reflect the time period they were made in- common people’s conflicts, their dreams, local legends, real events that happened. They’re violent because many of them were written at a dark time, and not necessarily meant for children. They were stories that were used to scare people, or mock people, or be satirical, or the explain things that were unexplained.

You have to keep in mind that these written in a time when children were surrounded by plague, famine, starvation, war, disease, and other things that people today rarely have to worry about. Times were darker and more dangerous back then.

Plus, fairy tales weren’t really written for children specifically. They were meant for children and adults. They only become directed towards children with Grimm Brothers’ books.
