book review: Wrestling with God – a personal odyssey by Azeem Kayum
At first glance the title of this book seems rather strange. A book about one man's struggle to overcome some serious physical disabilities and learning, what could God possibly have to do with anything? In fact the book is very cleverly entitled, the goddess in question comes from Greek mythology, and his name is Ondine. His claim to fame is that she discovered her husband's infidelity mortal, and decided to look revenge. This took the form of a curse, Ondine's curse. Her husband's brain would stop working with him to go to sleep. All activity stops, even in the functions automatic as breathing, death would be the inevitable result.
The medical condition that he suffers from Azeem Kayum is sometimes referred to as a curse Ondina. It is extremely rare and little is known medically about it. A normal brain, even in its most primitive form is programmed to perform automated tasks such as breathing. I'm sure many people have heard of "sleep apnea" a situation in which breathing stops temporarily, usually restarts a few seconds later by the alarm system of the brain kicks in, and sending the 'hey instruction start breathing again. "Ondine's Curse victims do not have the same alarm system, simply die.
Kayum Azeem is now in his late 20s, a feat that has surprised many in the field of medicine. The prognosis at birth was not good, would not survive more than a few days. Even if he did survive, most likely would be seriously disabled, both physically and mentally. These few days when he became a couple of weeks, after a few months, and finally a few years.
The breathing, while obviously a very fundamental challenge was not his only challenge. Babies and toddlers are learning machines, which absorbs information and stimuli in their environment, and learning instinctively how to apply the acquired knowledge. No more than seeing a young man a few minutes to see this in action. A brightly colored toy is explored, the aspect touch with your fingers or toes, the taste factor through the mouth and tongue, nose, asks what smells good, and ears want to know if you make any noise?
But what happens if you do not have many of these machine learning tools? For all Azeem this was a challenge, I was a child who had to learn to learn. Even simple tasks like sitting in a chair is not intuitive, meeting, a skill he had to learn.
medical equipment expert help and save lives 'breathe' combined with a loving and caring family has created nothing short of a miracle.
written by Azeem same Kayum, Wrestling with the Goddess is a truly unique book, but more Azeem is a unique individual. Against almost insurmountable obstacles has achieved much in his young life, a grade 13 education, a college diploma with honors, and a career as a motivational speaker.
He may be different, may have needs that few of us can understand, but it is like any young, he has aspirations and dreams.
One of his biggest dreams is become somehow involved in the world of professional wrestling, he realizes that his physical problems are opposed to any involvement in or around the ring, but he knows much about it and would love an opportunity or news commentator. So, if a person is reading this comment struggle, why not give this girl a chance?
In fact, I am nothing but a literary critic, I put on another hat, I'm also the editor in chief of the news Blogger. I'll make this offer to Azeem. I know that radio is his favorite medium, but if you want to be our struggle correspondent, we'd love to have!
You can pick up your own copy of this inspiring book to deal with adversity in the Amazon.
