book review: The Book of Common Prayer
Review: The Book of Common Prayer, "My copy take-with-me is this size, and I recommend places to travel … "
by Peter Menkin
Here I am daring to comment on this wonderful book, used by bishops and one of the Publications prayer and rubric that unite Anglicans worldwide. (There are about 77 million Anglicans worldwide, and most have their own "Version" of this wonderful book and inspired, but perhaps the specific size that I write and this specific American version can not be familiar for them all.)
My copy than this size, and a similar price good as this (take advantage of a good deal, by the way), has been used by me during ten years or so. It has been a durable book, but now brought to the sagging leather cover, in spite of my treatment from time to time. But then I took him in my car, and sometimes leaves it in the seat where the sun hits. However, it has proved durable.
There are many uses for personal prayer book, and playing in some of them is important to me to note in this recitation, the main objective of this edition of the Book of Common Prayer for me is taking for the elderly, hospital, and the like (including home visits), to administer Communion to home. It is an excellent size for travel, and as there can not be mentioned, also offers the complete book with all the prayers and that includes, "Communion in special circumstances" in the Episcopal Church to take communion to home.
As a licensed lay minister in my church, and as an Oblate, I am always moved and informed of the same words that they shared, intimate service. To give the reader, an idea of the character of the book, here is a quote from the first sentence of section "Communion under special circumstances."
"Almighty father, whose beloved Son, in the night before he suffered, instituted the Sacrament of his Body and Blood: Mercifully grant that we may receive Luckily in memory of Jesus Christ our Lord, who in these holy mysteries gives us a pledge of eternal life, and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen. "
There is flexibility in the sentences and headings allow the clergy or lay minister administering the Eucharist to do the following: "After reading [found before the opening prayer cited above], the Celebrant may comment briefly. "Also," Suitable prayers may be offered, concluding with the following or some other Collect. "
My opinion is the book, both religious, spiritual and literary work inspired, encouraged discussion of spiritual a religious nature before or after the words of the service. Thus, the Eucharist or communion is a community activity, when the idea of sharing experience of the Church is growing in the presence of God and man.
When I visit the elderly, especially the frail elderly in my visits, I sometimes Psalms action. The book contains the 150 Psalms, his own translation, of course. This is one of my favorites, not only because of its familiarity, but also because it is a kind of declaration on the trip and the ministry with which I am engaged in this pastoral relationship:
Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd
I'm not going to fail.
He makes me lie down in green pastures
and leads me beside still waters.
He revives my soul
and guides me along right pathways for his name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my distress;
You anoint my head with oil,
and my cup is overflowing.
Surely goodness and mercy follow me all the days of my life
dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
It is a good place to end the review.

Examination Notes: A friend tells me by e-mail is the revision "Too long and too much about his personal ministry. You could try to read comments from others (if any) or the study of what the Church says about this publication. "
I'm happy for criticism and suggestions. Here is my answer, in part, "As you can tell from the review, my intention was not to take himself book review, but some of it relevant to me and specific to particular 'version' (cheap, small, portable and useful for a specific purpose and type of ministry).
"I also wanted to talk to bishops themselves, as well as Christians, However, in a way that would engage them in the review based on experience rather than knowledge. To do this, I thought I had to use my own personal (Although it could be a better term personable), which expert opinion.
"For me, dealing with such an impressive and holy a work has more validity and authenticity to the position used. Certainly, there is a kind of authority in this type of review by the testimony of (of course it is an important element of the review, the intention).
"There you have an explanation of why I wrote it as I did, and part of the justification for the design of the approach. "
I can add from the publication of the review here: I hope that readers of the magazine to find interesting and able to report some merits of the book of prayers for the Holy Episcopal Church in the United States, The Book of Common Prayer
It is many things, and contains instructions for services of worship, including Eucharist, daily prayer, Burial, and other rites and sacraments of the Church. As a literary work is wonderful and famous, and admired in this regard. I can not say how much I have found in this book, and others have found, too.
It brings one closer to God in Christ and reveals a central part the worship of the Episcopal. An essential book for many Christians of that name, and good reading for others who may be interested.
I hope my notes added assist the review to meet some of the objections of my friend.
