Americans could face serious health risks of foods everyday

According to a report by the Center for Health, Environment, and Justice, Americans are less serious risk of daily consumption of dioxin. Exposure to this chemical substance is not the most suspect -is not even in the food we eat.

The risk of contracting cancer from exposure to dioxin is 1 in 10,000 population general U.S. and 1 in 1,000 for members of high risk population. These risks are 100 and 1,000 times higher, respectively, than in-a-million of "acceptable risk cancer. And we know that the daily intake of dioxin Americans is already too high, exceeding the guidelines Federal risk.

Dioxin is the common name for the chemical 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). All American children were born with dioxin in their bodies. The greatest impact appears to be on the growth and development of children. Disrupted sexual development, birth defects and immune system damage can result.

It has also been associated with a low IQ, withdrawn and depressed behavior, adverse effects on the ability to concentrate and focus attention and increased hyperactive behavior in children.

What foods contain dioxins? Mostly meat and ice cream products themselves. An independent laboratory found unacceptable levels of dioxin in a sample of the vanilla flavor of one of America's most popular brands of ice cream.

The dairy and beef cattle absorb dioxin by eating contaminated crops. Dioxins are in the air and deposited on crops. They can enter in the air thousands of sources, including incinerators that burn medical, municipal and hazardous waste.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that exposure, no matter how small, increases the risk of cancer. The EPA has calculated a "virtual safe dose" (VSD) for dioxins, generally considered a low exposure and acceptable. The amount of dioxin in the portion of the ice tested exceeded that VOD.

Studies conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences suggest that dioxins are very slow to leave the body and accumulate in adipose tissue.
