Ways in which the Beatles were such a standout band?

Since the Beatles remastered CD released Sept. 9, I have seen many adds to the cabinet. I know that the group was extremely important in rock history, but I do not understand why, because my area of focus is on classical music. Can someone give me an insight into what makes the Beatles this band stand out and what should I be attentive listening to their music for the first time? I heard some songs, but he never really connected with me and seems so dated, but I want to give him a better, more patient re-evaluation. Please enlighten me because I always enjoy great music regardless of genre.
