The sacrifice of individuality in Steven Crane's novel of Civil War, The Red Badge of Courage
When Steven Crane wrote The Red Badge of Courage in 1895, had never yet been in battle, to say nothing of the American Civil War. However, it is now considered one of the most accurate portrait of the war in literature – a feature that many Americans were initially labeled as "unpatriotic." Only when British critics praised the novel could forgive Americans Crane's suggestion that war is a picnic in the park.
The novel centers on Henry Fleming, also known as "The youth, who entered the war expecting poetry, grandeur, courage, and above all, action – when the ladies welcome you home, what it is. What is not included in their plans is the fact that war is boring when nothing happens terrible at any time and does nothing. In only its second round of the battle, the youth returned to his relationship with the will to live and runs for the hills.
While holding a pineapple a squirrel in the woods, young people have an epiphany: the squirrel no unwavering support exists to meet a honorable death, why should it? This revelation makes you feel very intelligent, but, like most of life decisions squirrel, based on the feeling only lasts a few minutes. The waiter trips over a corpse that is virtually riverdancing with ants and has another epiphany: the world really does not matter who lives or dies. Although this may be shocking, it's also kind of release, and goes back to the battle.
Just because A) realize that your life is not so important in the grand scheme of things, and B) decision to sacrifice his individuality to a broader concept (such as Union, the flag, the camaraderie, or U.S. History ) is the power of Youth to unite and influence the battle. So: take the "I" out of the picture that really makes the whole "save yourself!" at least one edition. It's the same logic that makes you dive for the ball like a 300 pound man named Buck carving a way through his teammates: had better really wants the ball or I like your team.
With this in mind, it is not surprising that all the main characters of the title = "Red Badge of Courage"> Red Badge of Courage both real names, like Henry, Jim, or Wilson and generic names such as the Youth, the tall soldier or the soldier fort. In fact, Stephen Crane was way ahead of his time when he decided to write a novel of war that soldiers fight personal explored instead of the global movement of Civil War battles or the title = "Causes of the Civil War"> causes of the Civil War, showing only individual experience could portray the process of becoming a part of " war machine. "Not bad for a 20-year old literary type who probably never even been in a fistfight.
