If it hadn’t been released in 1998 with a veteran cast of Hollywood’s finest, you could swear that Twilight was a movie from the 1940s–the kind of intelligent mystery that would’ve made Humphrey Bogart feel right at home. To be sure, that was exactly the intention of director and co-writer Robert Benton (in collaboration with Nobody’s Fool writer Richard Russo), but the film’s blessing is also it…

In 1959 Emmy Award-winning playwright Rod Serling transported viewers to “a fifth dimension … as vast as space and as timeless as infinity … and it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge.” It was an area he called The Twilight Zone. One of television’s greatest series (it’s still the pop-culture reference point for the weird and bizarre), this series is well repr…

How’s this for a Twilight Zone kind of irony? The movie version of Rod Serling’s landmark sci-fi TV series turns out to be less memorable than the episodes upon which it was based. Despite the presence of four of-that-moment directors, the film–based on three TV episodes and one original idea–is remembered more for its prologue (starring Dan Aykroyd and Albert Brooks) and for its offscreen trage…

Twilight in the Desert

Twilight in the Desert

$16.95

Twilight in the Desert reveals a Saudi oil and production industry that could soon approach a serious, irreversible decline. In this exhaustively researched book, veteran oil industry analyst Matthew Simmons draws on his three-plus decades of insider experience and more than 200 independently produced reports about Saudi petroleum resources and production operations. He uncovers a story about Saudi Arabia’s troubled oil industry, not to mention its political and societal instability, which differs sharply from the globally accepted Saudi version. It’s a story that is provocative and disturbing, based on undeniable facts, but until now never told in its entirety. Twilight in the Desert answers all readers’ questions about Saudi oil and production industries with keen examination instead of unsubstantiated posturing, and takes its place as one of the most important books of this still-young century.

Twilight of the Idols

Twilight of the Idols

Nietzsche intended Twilight of the Idols to serve as a short introduction to the whole of his philosophy, and to be the most synoptic of all his books. A masterpiece of polemic, this `great declaration of war' targets not only `eternal idols' like Socratic rationality and Christian morality but also their contemporary counterparts, as Nietzsche the `untimely man' goes roaming in the gloaming of nineteenth-century European culture. This brilliant new translation issupplemented by a detailed commentary on one of Neitzsche's most condensed works. – ;`Anyone who wants to gain a quick idea of how before me everything was topsy-turvy should make a start with this work. That which is called idol on the title-page is quite simply that which was called truth hitherto. Twilight of the Idols – in plain words: the old truth is coming to an end…' Nietzsche intended Twilight of the Idols to serve as a short introduction to his philosophy, and as a result it is the most synoptic of all his books. Continuing in the spirit of its immediate predecessors On The Genealogy of Morals and The Wagner Case, it is a masterpiece of polemic, targeting not only `eternal idols' like Socratic rationality and Christian morality but also their contemporary counterparts, as Nietzsche the `untimely man' goes roaming in the gloaming ofnineteenth-century European culture. He allies philosophy with psychology and physiology, relentlessly diagnozing the symptoms of decadence, and his stylistic virtuosity is such that the sheer delight he takes in his 'demonic' mischief-making communicates itself on every page. A brilliant new translation, this editionprovides detailed commentary on a highly condensed and allusive work. -

Twilight Zone

Twilight Zone

$9.99

An original anthology celebrating Rod Serling’s landmark television series When it first aired in 1959, The Twilight Zone was nothing less than groundbreaking television. Freed from much of the censors’ strict oversight because of the show’s classification as “science fiction,” the 156 filmed episodes explored powerful and moving human themes—love, hate, pride, jealousy, terror—in their own unique style. The show has since inspired two revivals, as well as fiction, comic books, and magazines, and even a pinball game and theme park rides.  Just as important, it sparked the imaginations of countless writers, filmmakers, and fans around the world, and is considered a seminal show for broadening the horizons of television. This anthology will be an all-new collection of stories written in the vein of the original television show. 2009 is the fiftieth anniversary of The Twilight Zone’s first broadcast year. Edited and featured and introduction by Carol Serling, the anthology will include brand new stories by science fiction and fantasy luminaries such as Whitley Strieber, Loren D. Estleman, Joe Lansdale, R. L. Stine, Timothy Zahn, and Peter S. Beagle, as well as writers from the original series, Earl Hammer and Harlan Ellison®, all in honor of Rod’s incredible vision.
