Thank you for audiobooks, a blind student felt normal among the rest of his class!
Tommy introduced me to a challenge that I had not yet met in my short teaching career. Normally, children who are visually impaired are sent to the Westfield School the Blind, which is one of the few towns away, but Tommy's parents insisted that he be placed in local public school. They wanted Tommy feel as normal as possible, it was not different from other children.
A noble concept for sure. I Tommy's parents admired for their thinking, and I admire Tommy for his courage even to go to plan his parents. Like his teacher English, I have not seen him for 40 minutes per day. I ran a class that revolved around reading … how could I get my students to turn role of reading a book aloud in class? What will happen when it was time for Tommy?
Tommy was fluent in Braille, but his parents insisted that we not use braille books
while at school, because that would be Tommy feel different. He used Braille
Home reading his missions, but how we as teachers considered him an active part
the classroom without Braille?
I came up with a solution – an audiobook. I asked Tommy's parents to provide a player for him to make classroom. I bought a copy of the audio book we were reading in class – All quiet on the Western Front.
I met Tommy before the class, and told him my plan. I put the audio book to a certain part. Firstly, I would ask several other students to read few paragraphs. Then, when it comes to the party I started to tape Tommy, I call on him. Then he plays on the press walkman, listening to the author, and repeat out loud to me!
Thank you to an audio book, a blind student could feel normal in the rest of his class.
