I need a good source for information on how Shakespeare’s plays are related to each other?
I have a final exam coming up on Monday which is going to include an essay about connections/related themes in Shakespeare’s plays. Shockingly, the teacher is making it open-note and open book. If anyone know’s where I can get some good information about relating the plays and characters that I can print, that’d be awesome. The essay is worth 70% of the final!
How AREN’T Shakespeare’s plays related to one another? Any way you look, character, theme, rhetoric, dramatic technique, imagery, sources, there are relationships.
What are the themes? I suggest you write down what you suppose the themes of the four great tragedies and two of the comedies and one of the problem plays. Just make notes of what you imagine from your reading their themes to be. This will help you come up with better questions to ask, and decrease the shock feeling of having too much information available.
Key advice: rely on your own knowledge of Shakespeare before anothers, then use that knowledge to prompt specific and quick questions and answers. Each specific question you can ask and answer can become part of your essay.
With all due respect, I doubt any of us need any more information about Shakespeare for the rest of our lives. What we need is more context within which to put the information we already have so that new questions can be posed.
The above research strategy will help your confidence and speed up your search because you will eliminate all the stuff you don’t understand about Shakespeare. We can safely bet there is a lot we don’t understand about Will’s work, so focus instead on building on top of what you already know.
Good luck!
