book review Birds on My Brush: A compelling account of the unknown artist of the life of one!

The life and times 18th-century wildlife artist Elizabeth Gwillim and filled in the mystery and uncertainty. She was born in England in 1763 and moved to India with her husband in the early 1800, where he worked diligently to perfect their art.

She never achieve recognition in his life and death, an obscure artist, undiscovered, in his mid-40s, apparently, for longer, as if his art may have gone to the grave with her.

Almost two centuries later, watercolors Gwillim wildlife were "discovered" in London, England, art shop. Today, in death, Gwillim has achieved what could not in life, his art wildlife, in particular, accurate drawings of birds has been widely praised as one of the best of his era. Gwillim work is now part of the collection more black-Wood of Zoology and Natural History at McGill University in Montreal, one of the pre-eminent schools in Canada for higher education.

Carole M. Lidgold, a Canadian writer Gwillim fascinated with the life and art, has painted a fascinating picture of life Gwillim in his new novel, fiction based on facts Birds my brush. Lidgold has taken what is known of the history and Gwillim built around the edges, the development of a novel fully realized the schematic framework of Gwillim life is remarkable.

She has created a main character, Sarah Purcell, Purcell using the character as a substitute for Gwillim, and produced a sweeping history, fascinating art lovers and history is both highly enjoyable and memorable dramatically.

The history covers the artist's life from an early age in England, through the artistic productive period in India, to the point relatively early death of the artist. Along the way, this amount is very clear: Lidgold author fascination with the life and works of art from Gwillim shines over 280 pages of the novel. A special bonus for readers is that birds on My Brush offers not only to some factual details of life Gwillim, but also some representative samples of his artwork.

Lidgold is an accomplished writer, whose stories are brimming with life and vitality. Birds on My Brush offers something beyond that – a historical and artistic integrity that takes readers and time to see the challenge the artist could imagine only in your dreams.

In a prolific life of singular literary achievement, Larry McMurtry has succeeded in a variety of genres: in coming-of-age novels like The Last Picture Show ; in collections of essays like In a Narrow Grave ; and in the reinvention of the Western on a grand scale in his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Lonesome Dove . Now, in Books: A memoir , McMurtry writes about his endless passion for books: as a boy growing up in a largely “bookless” world; as a young man devouring the vastness of literature with astonishing energy; as a fledgling writer and family man; and above all, as one of America’s most prominent bookmen. He takes us on his journey to becoming an astute, adventurous book scout and collector who would eventually open stores of rare and collectible editions in Georgetown, Houston, and finally, in his previously “bookless” hometown of Archer City, Texas. In this work of extraordinary charm, grace, and good humor, McMurtry recounts his life as both a reader and a writer, how the countless books he has read worked to form his literary tastes, while giving us a lively look at the eccentrics who collect, sell, or simply lust after rare volumes. Books: A Memoir is like the best kind of diary — full of McMurtry’s wonderful anecdotes, amazing characters, engaging gossip, and shrewd observations about authors, book people, literature, and the author himself. At once chatty, revealing, and deeply satisfying, Books is, like McMurtry, erudite, life loving, and filled with excellent stories. It is a book to be savored and enjoyed again and again.
