What’s the importance of the 4th edition DM Handbook?
What’s the importance of the 4th Edition Dungeon Master’s Handbook when compared to the Player’s Handbook 1+2 and Monster Manual 1+2? Do you really need the DM’s Handbook? It seems a little useless if it fails to contribute any new mechanics.
I can’t speak to the 4e DMG 2 as I do not own it.
However, for the 4e DMG, however, I can offer this:
Chaps 1 & 2 were necessary for new players, not experienced players. Mostly a lot of talk about they types of players, what you need, what kind of games to play.
chapter 3 had some good bits on how to handle 4e combat, and offers some good suggesstion for when a player comes up with an idea that doesn’t quite fit into a ’standard action’.
Chapter 4 was good. It explained how to set up a single combat encounter. From soup to nuts. Monster Roles, Encounter Components, Encounter Templates, Encounter Settings. All of this was very handy.
Chapter 5 was similar to Chapter 4, but it discusses Non-Combat encounters. Hazards & Skill-Challeneges. A lot of the mechanics on how to set up one, and how to judge the success/failure of the non-combat encounter.
Chapter 6 is about Adventures. Info in this chapter, is a lot of stuff that an experienced DM should know, but may need reminding of, from time to time. Not bad, but if you’re a pretty experienced DM, you may not have needed this chapter. Admittedly many of the things in this chapter, I don’t do well, so I probably would use it.
Chapter 7 is about Rewards. Some useful guidelines about how often players should level, what kinds of treasure to give out, etc. What it fails to discuss is XP for role-playing. Big Zero on that one. It almost seemed as if they forgot about that little item on purpose. Maybe, Maybe not.
Chapter 8 is all about the campaign. Types to run, common themes, using a homebrew vs established setting. Good info for noobs, but no mechanical cruch here for us experienced types.
Chapter 9 is all aout the default ’settings’, if you will for the generic D&D world. Useful data for newbs, but the changed some of the framework for us more experienced types. Read it to get a handle on the new cosmology, but otherwise, it offers little technical stuff.
Chapter 10: DM’s toolbox: Good stuff here. Creating yuor own monsters, NPC’s, House Rules, etc. If you use these kinds of things in your game, then this will help you. If you don’t, then it won’t.
The last section is a mini-mod, so you can get players rolling, if you don’t have a module on hand.
So there’s my mini-review of 4e DMG (#1)
